November 27, 200520 yr I haven't seen this posted yet, but I just heard it on the Score recently. Chandler finally admitted that he's been playing injured with a hernia injury. I will post a link when I find it.
November 27, 200520 yr Link But the Bull to watch in the coming weeks is Tyson Chandler, who has experienced shortness of breath and was diagnosed last week with a hiatal hernia, also known as diaphragmatic hernia. "I knew something wasn't right," Chandler said. "I was feeling like I couldn't get my wind." Chandler said he is taking medication twice a day, except on game nights when he skips an evening dosage to avoid potential side effects. It's hard to say if Bulls coach Scott Skiles is concerned. Asked about it before the game, he said he didn't know anything about it. The episodes certainly made Chandler nervous. He coordinated a visit to a specialist with team athletic trainer Fred Tedeschi. Chandler has struggled with acid reflux in the past and also had lesions in his esophagus from acid buildup. The reflux is under control and the lesions have healed, Tedeschi said. Information on the Mayo Clinic Web site says a hiatal hernia can form at the opening of the diaphragm where the esophagus joins the stomach. It causes chest pain similar to heartburn, Chandler said. "It makes you nervous because you can feel it in your heart, it seems," he said. The extent of its effect on his play is unclear. He didn't start the season in great shape, but that was attributed to a poor workout regimen in the summer. He said he often fights fatigue from the condition, especially in the fourth quarter. November 27, 200520 yr Author Not exactly the hernia injury that I expected to see...but it probably has been affecting his play this season.
November 27, 200520 yr I wonder what type of treatment options there are for something like this and how serious this injury is.
November 28, 200520 yr I think all of the time off the bulls have had recently, plus Chandler taking the medecine to heal the hernia, should give Chandler a good prognosis. I am not too worried about this affecting his play.
November 28, 200520 yr He didn't start the season in great shape, but that was attributed to a poor workout regimen in the summer I thought playing with heart meant you also had a strong work ethic...
November 28, 200520 yr Ok where are all the Tyson Apologists? He did not come to camp in shape? That Contradicts just about everything all the little Tyson fans have said on this board about him.
November 28, 200520 yr QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Nov 28, 2005 -> 04:44 PM) I hope he doesn't require surgery. pills pills and more pills.
November 28, 200520 yr at this age with a hernia he probably will need it, usually it goes undetected in early years and you dont have to worry about it, and over time it grows, hes best off gettin the surgery as early as possible, i would know a relative of mine had it

Unfortunately, that coincided with getting paid by the Bulls.

And of course it has shown up on the court as well.
November 29, 200520 yr I think he waited till the contract was signed to prevent injury. You can knock him for that, but I can see where its coming from. He had zero history of this and from what I remember he had bulked up weight wise. He just wasn't in the endurance shape that Skiles wanted.

Zero history of throat and acid reflux problems? If that's what you mean, he's been missing games since '03, I believe, from that. Anyways, until the difference is noticeable in terms of how he looks and how he plays, I won't use his name and "bulking up" in the same sentence. It's his size and not his strength that allows him to grab boards. He'd be having 20-rebound games if he truly bulked up.

He was a higher draft pick than Eddy.

Chandler didn't play much basketball this summer, as guys don't want to risk injury when a contract is in the works. You're exactly right. That's not a horrible excuse. It's the truth. And besides, work ethic is evident on the court. Look around, try to find as many scouting reports as you can on Tyson. It is well known that he works his ass off on the court, and the only thing that people have negative to say about him aside from his lack of offensive upside is that he can be a punk at times. That's called a mean streak. Lots of conservative old white men don't understand it. His contributions to team chemistry are immeasurable. All the Bulls players love Tyson. I wish that I could say the same about the majority of Bulls fans, although I understand that most people want to see scoring numbers first and foremost.

Both players are still babies in NBA terms, although Eddy has proven to be a lazy, soft S.O.B. He is universally regarded as a bum by knowledgeable NBA experts, but there are plenty of fans who like him for whatever reason. Again, it all comes down to scoring potential. That's what the vast majority are concerned with. Therefore, your average NBA fan would probably label Chandler as more of a bust that Curry thus far. I'm just glad that we have Tyson locked down, because I would be severely heated if he went elsewhere and pulled a Ben Wallace (minus the incredible hulk type strength).
