Can this be put in giant bold letters atop Soxtalk? So it never has to be explained again.

Allow me to suggest not clicking on the thread. It is a valid question.

If you put it in BOLD LETTERS it will still be wrong.

Crede is entering his first year of arbitration. You go through arbitration three times before becoming a free agent.

Let's count this out.

2006 = First year of arb.

2007 = Second year of arb.

2008 = Third year of arb.

2009 = Free Agent

Didn't say s*** about you, it's just most people think he's a free agent after the '06 season. It's a wide spread myth at this point.

You are correct. I thought this was his second year, he'll hit free agency after the '08 season instead.

I guess it wasn't a bad question afterall. ;)

I'd like to add to this...

There should be no fear of Scott Boras regarding Crede's contract. Let's review the possibilities here.

Joe has a breakout season - Joe will be due a healthy raise at his second year of arbitration. But, with free-agency two years away, he has little leverage in contract negotiations. The Sox can offer him a three (or 4) year deal, buying out a year (or two) of free-agency. If Fields develops, or the Sox are in a budget crunch, they can ship him off because he'll be signed at less than what he'll make on the open market.

Joe has another crediocre season, followed by a breakout - This a worst case scenario for the Sox, and it's not a bad scenario. Fields will probably still need until '08 until he's ready to really contribute at the big league level anyway, and it will be at the perfect time when Crede puts himself into a Garland-type situation. The Sox either trade crede, or just offer him arbitration with the knowledge that Schnurstein ;) is their new 3B and they'll be fine just getting a couple of draft picks on Crede's departure.

Joe has nothing but crediocre seasons - We are not obligated to do anything but offer him arbitration.

The only time Boras would become an issue is in the first scenario, after Crede has completed his contract. That doesn't project to be until '09-'10. And assuming he's producing, he'd be easy to trade with his reasonable contract.

"Crediocre" -- greatest catch-phrase ever. :lol:
