The Royals, continuing their effort to add established veterans, are closing on a two-year deal with free-agent outfielder Reggie Sanders for approximately $10 million, FOXSports.com has learned.

 

Sanders, 38, is expected to play left field for the Royals, who earlier this week signed first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz, second baseman Mark Grudzielanek, right-handed starter Scott Elarton and backup catcher Paul Bako.

 

Several teams, including the Dodgers, were reluctant to give Sanders a multi-year deal. But the Royals, after losing out to the Cubs for free-agent outfielder Jacque Jones, valued Sanders' leadership as well as his production.

I do see your point though, but it's also just that some of their youngsters aren't performing, and right now you don't know if they can get to the level of their potential.

It's pretty sad that the Royals continue to pick up over-the-hill players over the years instead of playing their prospects. Either way, they aren't going to compete so what's the difference? At least if you play your prospects you get a chance to see if any of them are really good.

That kind of thing will happen to the Royals regardless. Who do they have in their bullpen who's any good? Andy Sisco?

They will have a ton of players on the DL this year for geriatric related conditions. At least some of these names might draw an extra 50 people to the stadium.

They have at least 3 or 4 guys that throw extremely hard.

Don't Reggie Sanders teams always make the playoffs? Consider yo'self warned. I actually really like this signing for KC. They have to overpay to get decent players to sign with them, but this is a reasonable contract.

Well, the question is...do the Royals have any prospects who are ready who could play those positions? Based on what we saw last year, I kinda doubt it.

 

I would wager that management has decided that if they spend a little bit more money, maybe shoot to win 70 games, they'll at least break even from drawing a few more fans to the park. And they always have these veterans with expiring contracts that they can use as trade bait when July and August roll around, if they're smart.

The problem is the Royals have s***ty prospects at most of the positions so in most instances they are better off going with veterans and hope they can eventually turn those veterans into good prospects.

And now, in the Royals’ offseason of change, comes this doozy: They’re actually outbidding teams for free agents.

 

Outfielder Reggie Sanders is the latest player impressed not only by the Royals’ checkbook but also by their plans for the future. Sanders said Thursday that he has agreed to a two-year, $10 million contract that is expected to be signed today.

 

General manager Allard Baird would not comment on the agreement, as the Royals are still awaiting results from Sanders’ physical taken Thursday afternoon in Arizona.

 

Sanders said he turned down an offer from potential playoff contender Cleveland to come to Kansas City, where he probably will play right field and bat cleanup behind Mike Sweeney.

 

“The Royals stepped up to the plate and did what they had to do,” Sanders said. “Other teams were close. But the Royals went a little further.”

The team also signed former Twins righthander Joe Mays, 30, to a one-year, $1 million contract, expecting him to earn a spot in the rotation.

 

Sanders hit .271 with 21 home runs and 54 RBI this past summer for St. Louis. He broke his right leg in an outfield collision July 15 but hit .305 with 10 homers and 29 RBI in 40 games after returning to the lineup in September.

 

Mays, a 17-game winner and All-Star for the Twins in 2001, was 6-10 with a 5.65 ERA last year after undergoing major elbow surgery in 2003
