Baseball in Las Vegas

Featured Replies

Here are a couple of articles that discuss the attempts that Las Vegas is making to land a MLB team along with the odds of a few teams under consideration.

Who would not jump on a plane to see the Sox play the A's or Twins in Sin City?

If the Twins move, I wonder if they will bring the Rangers back to the Central.

I dunno. There are more fun things to do in Vegas than watch baseball. Plus it'd have to be an indoor stadium because when I went there in July once it was 118. I think they'd do ok but their current stadium is only 8 thousand people so they'd need to build it before a team could come. I guess its better to have baseball there than South Florida though.

Whether or not there are more fun things to do there...I think the real desire of having a team based in Vegas is that the Casino's money would be pumped into that team...you'd have the casinos buying tickets for people to comp, owning all of the luxury/skyboxes to bring in high rollers, buying up every ad possible, and so forth.

Any sport in Vegas would be a money-making machine. It'll be good for all sports to get in on it. I would definitely head on over to Vegas for a series, hopefully it'll be an AL team there.

I can see Pete Rose's reinstatement campaign getting ready for this right now.

As long as Selig is commish, MLB will never play regular season games in Vegas, imo.

That says it all right there. Not that baseball would not thrive there, but I would not spend my time in Vegas at a baseball game ... unless the White Sox were the visiting team

Yeah, there are! But, it may be wise to get away from the tables and the table dances for awhile and save some cash! vbg :D

I think he'll be here for a while.

I disagree.....there is a nice sized population there. I have family that lives there and I know they would love it. Granted, they would be WS fans first, but would root for the Vegas team, just as I do the Rangers. :gosox3:

I think it would be tourists and also locals who have moved there from elsewhere such as Chicago and New York and St. Louis. etc...

Down here in Nashville, the NHL Predators have a core of local support, but they also have a lot of transplants like me who go to see the Blackhawks or the RedWings or the Rangers etc..

Las Vegas has a population of about a half million people, which makes it bigger than a few places in MLB today such as KC, Cleveland, Atlanta, Oakland, Miami, Minneapolis etc...

They'd have to have pretty strict rules on players not screwing around the nights before games.

Just to address a few points in this thread.....

1) Yes, I would definitely go to games in Vegas (I live here though so thats a no brainer!)

2) Selig does not seem opposed to a MLB team relocating here....right now, the NFL and NBA have made public statements against it happening....the NHL is very iffy.....but MLB seems very supportive of having a team here provided that a suitable stadium is built.

3) Vegas is much larger than 500,000....This is low for the city itself, but by the time you include Henderson and North Las Vegas into the equation, you've got about 1.2 million people to target.

In summary....if you build it, they will come. Let's bring MLB to Vegas!

Kinda like the Diamondbacks!

here's where we disagree for a few reasons...

1) I can gamble here in Illinois. I live 30 minutes from 2 casinos. I still go to Vegas once per year. Golf is huge in Vegas. People can certainly golf at home. So the whole theory of people go to vegas to do what they cant do at home is bs.

2) Fans travel to Spring Training in FL and AZ to watch their favorite teams. Wouldn't they travel to Vegas for the same reason???

3) People come to Vegas from areas that are no where near major league cities. If you live in Springfield IL and are a Sox fan, you can drive 4 hours each way to Chicago or you can fly to Vegas in 3 hours and see them play while having a great vacation.

4) Vegas is the fastest growing city in the US. Nevada is the fastest growing state in the US. The nearest team is over 4 hours away.

I certainly think that for any given game, the fan base at a game would probably be 50/50 for the home/away team. At the same point, I think that a Vegas team would draw over 2 million per game.

I also question that Selig would let MLB play in Las Vegas. As was previously posted it would never take off unless it was in a domed stadium, because of the heat. :gosoxretro:

That would have to be a HELL of a big stadium! vbg :D

late night typing= crazy thoughts...

obviously i meant 2 mil per year. :cheers

Ya, just like the Dbacks needed one due to the heat.

Population numbers for a given city are kind of worthless in the U.S. Chicago has only 2.8M, but the metro area is 9.1M. Other cities, like Albuquerque, look big at 600k (similar to Las Vegas), but that's really all there is.

Las Vegas metro has a population of 1.5M, and is the fastest growing metro in the U.S. during the last 10-year census cycle...
