bears honing in on defense in the draft?

Featured Replies

today's sun-times article sure makes it sound that way. paraphrasing, angelo thinks the offense will improve and is comfortable with what benson, bradley and currie will bring to the table next year. he's not against the idea of moving peanut to safety (somewhere, greg blache is smiling). he is leaning toward drafting defense with the first pick, and most picks.

to back this up, the writer of the story (mike mulligan) was on the score this afternoon and said he expected the bears to select either a defensive back or linebacker (bobby carpenter, please) with their first pick. mully is a pretty astute observer of the bears and i do put stock in what he says.

anyhow, who are the candidates for the bears at db and lb where they pick?

of course, there's always the possibility of this being one of angelo's much ballyhooed "smokescreens" (lol) but it's fodder for talk anyway.

The names will all change after the Senior Bowl results come out.

I wonder who is going to be the next converted-from-QB 1st rounder. It always happens to someone, last year it was Matt Jones.

thanks for your meaningful contribution to this thread.

it will actually change after the senior bowl, after the combine and after the individual workouts. so i guess we should just quit talking about the draft until then. :P

Doc,

I really would like Carpenter on the bears. Of course im a homer when it comes to him, but I really think that he brings the versatility that we need. He was underrated for OSU this year as he not only can rush the passer, but he can drop into coverage as well.

no doubt. i am biased because i know him and his family, but he is really one of the most versatile linebackers i've seen. i actually think he might not be around when the bears pick. once he works out he is really going to move up, imo. he ran a 4.59 at 6.3, 265 pounds last year and that is just getting it done.

There ain't one in the bunch. If I had to guess right here, right now, I'd say you'll see Penn State's Michael Robinson, Texas A&M's Reggie McNeal, and Georgia's DJ Shockley make position changes at the next level.

You guys know how I feel about Carpenter at this point. I, too, am crazy about him and I think his game is going to translate very, very well; I expect him to be a household name in the not too distant future. I mean, I really think he is going to be special. That said, it'd be foolish to take him in the first round if there is an offensive playmaker available. If there isn't an offensive playemaker avail, albeit at the TE position (i.e. Pope), then I could see the Bears going BPA. If that is the case, I'd be comfortable with his selecion in the first round.

If not the Bears, some teams I'd look for would be Seattle, New England, New York Giants, and maybe even Jacksonville.

Michael Robinson will not play one NFL game at QB.

FWIW, the Cowboys have a need at LB, and if Carpenter is available at #18, I definitely think they could take him.

Although knowing Parcells and Jones, we could easily trade up or down depending on the situation.

According to doc, the Carpenter family already has a relationship with Parcells and we all know how big Parcells is on relationships, stand-up guys, hustle players, etc.

The Cowboys are a definite possibility.

No, not these Carpenters.

At the very least, we still need a TE. Pro Bowler Desmond Clark isn't the answer. :headshake

It could depend on whether Chad Greenway is still on the board.

At the moment I'd say our picks for the 1st round would be Greenway, Carpenter, Michael Huff or one of the RT's like Winston Justice in that order.

You're probably spot-on in your assessment.

The 18th selection seems a bit far for Greenway to fall, but, you never know. You can never rule anything out. I'm not so sure Michael Huff will be there as well. I see Winston Justice falling a bit and he may end up somewhere around the 18th selection. There are just so many variables that still need to be worked out.

Jerry Angelo is very inept if he believes the offense will improve a ton. We were very lucky this that our O-line remained in tact for almost all the season. We simply cannot count of Ricky Jr., a guy coming off major knee surgery and a guy who had so many nagging injuries that he didn't play a single game to make this offense improve drastically. We need a TE, a WR and O-line depth. These can be adressed cost efficiently in the draft.

I just hope the Hawks go somewhere where I can keep hating them. :D

yeah, bobby's dad rob played for parcells in new york. rob told me that parcells had later asked him to coach running backs (i think with the pats) but rob was getting into high school coaching at the time and had four young kids (all boys, bobby being the eldest), so it didn't work out.

I do remember you telling me how you've grown to like Sanders and Clark.
