Just wait. By July you'll be happy to pay $2.75 a gallon.

404?? HOLY s***....Just a matter of time till we see that in Chicago.

I would be happy to pay that right now. As it stands, I am paying minimum of 2.80 a gallon.

When I worked for IDOT for one summer in 1997, I used to go to this gas station in South Elgin on Rte 25, right down the street from our site. $1.00 a gallon, I will never forget that now.

Good times, good times.

I know I am no match for the Soxtalk old timers, but I remember seeing 63 cents a gallon right before the first gulf war.

One interesting side effect of that: at $4 a gallon, the cost savings for hybid vehicles, especially for high mileage drivers, suddenly becomes significant (where as at $2.50, the savings may never happen at all (if based purely on the gas math).

I paid $6,000 for my current vehicle. I'd have to pay $20,000+ for a hybrid. Somehow I don't think I'd be saving much money...

$.35 when I was a youngin'

I live in Aurora and go to school in DeKalb, and it's between $2.90 and $3.00 a gallon. I remember taking a road trip to Florida during Christmas of 1997 when I was 11, and gas was between $.99 and $1.09.

I meant the differential cost difference between two similar new cars, one with a hybrid drive system, the other a conventional motor-only.

.699 in March of 1999 at the Chesterton Amoco.

Today, 2.759 is a steal.

Compare the Prius and the Scion XB.

The Prius gets roughly 45 mpg driving, the XB 30.

At 2.75 a gallon, the price differential (approximately 5,000) becomes equal at 163,934 miles into the car's life.

At 4.00 a gallon, the price differential becomes equal at 112,612 into the car's life.

According to GM, a full hybrid upgrade tends to run about 3k to 4k in differential cost. And that number will continually go down as time goes on.

I also saw that GM is putting out a "light" hybrid in the Saturn VUE later this year, which supposedly will give a 20% increase in average mileage (not sure how they make that "average" measurement) for only about a $600 increase in cost to build.

My last year of high school (only 5 years ago), gas was still under a buck.

By the way, whoever is filling up at that gas station is a moron. Its pretty expensive to fill up in my town, but gas is right at 3 or 3.05 and in cheaper parts 2.85-2.95

The Prius has come down in price, from about a 10K differential to a comprable regular auto to 5K.

I'm now thinking something. During the entire winter I'm going to post a thread of whats so great about CA (ie the weather) :)

MSRP may be that way, but from what I've gathered most dealers are still charging (and getting) markups on top of MSRP.

People are paying as much as 28-30K for them and thats a joke. At that price you could almost get yourself a lot of cars that are much nicer.

I remember it being as low as 79 cents and then people were really complaining about it when it got to be about 1.20.

I know.

It just sucks because I'm the kind of person that could really use a car like that. 80 miles roundtrip 5 days a week = about $80 a week in gas. I used to be able to get away with $40 - $50 a week.

The people that can afford those cars probably spend that $30 a week at Starbucks...

The fact that LA's public transportation system absolutely blows makes it even worse. At least you have great public transit in Chicago.

However, I do get a kick out of filling up next to some monstrous SUV and watching the driver's frown as the tab hits $80 for a fill up!

God bless George Bush. What a piece of s***.
