hammerhead johnson
I was just looking at our pitching numbers, and a 6.32 ERA vs right-handed hitting appears to suck, but that is actually the third best team ERA in the AL. 1. Detroit 4.93 2. New York 5.81 3. Chicago 6.32 4. Seattle 7.31 5. Anaheim 7.48 6. Texas 7.97 7. Oakland 8.11 8. Boston 8.37 9. Toronto 8.41 10. Cleveland 8.62 11. Tampa Bay 8.98 12. Baltimore 9.74 13. Kansas City 9.81 14. Minnesota 10.58 A full run better than the 4th best team. AL average = 8.03. Take away the best (Detroit) and the worst (Minnesota), and it's 8.08. What is going on in Minnesota??? Their pitching is supposed to be their team strength. You knew that their hitting was going to be medicore, but god damn. The Twins pitching has been horrid, but they do have hte arms. Right now I'm the most scared of the Tigers. There young pitching is developing faster than expected and the bullpen has held up thus far (especially Rodney). They may just have the best offense in the AL. Their bullpen sucks, their closer is horrid, and their offense is like us in 2001-2004.

I'm not saying the pitching will hold up. But I'd be just as worried about them than a team like the Indians who have a WORSE pitching staff. Bonderman is better than anyone the Tribe throws out (CC is never healthy so I don't really count him) and Verlander is developing far quicker than expected. Rogers is a very solid pitcher as is Maroth and Roberson isn't horrid. That pen is far from good, but its performed well thus far and they have one of the better managers in baseball. The offense is very good. The media may all hype the Indians, but as I've said from day one the Tigers got a pretty damn good ball club (so far they have been making me look good too). Do I think they'll be better than the Sox, NO, but thats if the Sox stay healthy. In the end I think the Tigers will eventually fall a bit because that pen will have its difficulties and the rotation may hit a rough couple weeks, but for all these people that say the Tribe are bar none the best team in our division (aside from us), well those people are wrong, imo. winninguglyin83
i, too, fear the Tigers. They've got speed, decent power, some vets. Shelton won't keep this up all season, but Pudge, Magglio and Dmtri can hit. I don't think Bonderman, Verlander and Maroth will keep this up for an entire season. But we have to stay healthy -- and get a bit more from Pods, BA and Uribe.
Gene Honda Civic
Can you please explain how this is calculated. ERA would seem to need PBP data to figure out. Is somebody going through and reconstructing games against only RH batters. I call shenanigans. ESPN's sortable stats displays the same info, yet all of MLB is tied for 1st with a 0.00 ERA against LH batters. Oh yeah, it's bunk. Use OPS. Shelton is already slowing down, and their best pitcher right now is Maroth for god sakes. They are baltimore of 2005.

I used stats sorted on Yahoo, and ESPN appears to have the same thing. I think that the actual team rankings are correct, but the numbers are off. I'm sure it wouldn't be too difficult for a computer program to figure this out. Divide innings pitched to right-handers by the RBI's credited to right-handed hitters and you have a total. Divide innings pitched to right-handers by the RBI's credited to right-handed hitters and you have a total. It's still a weird stat because left-handed batters who got on base and scored will be inflating your ERA against right-handed batters? Also what do you do when Boone Logan comes in and lets every inhereted runner score? It's affecting the removed pitcher's ERA even though Boone is the one acting like a turnstyle attendant. Like Cheat said, OPS or AVG against would be much better.
