Buehrle vs. Zito

Featured Replies

The A's TV crew had a very interesting comparison tonight of Zito and Buehrle. They've both played six seasons in the league but Zito gets far more pub. Take a look at the numbers, however:

Buehrle:

AGE: 27

ERA 3.58

RECORD 91-55

IP 1292.2

GS 182

Zito:

AGE: 28

ERA 3.48

RECORD 89-56

IP 1270.1

GS 198

Very comparable, but when you factor in that Zito's had 16 more starts and played on arguably better teams over the last 6 years, the edge goes to Mark.

Zito Career ERA+ = 129

Buehrle Career ERA+ = 128

Therefore Zito is hella better.

Also coincidentally, Buehrle debuted 6 games before Zito in '00.

They are very similar in the stats you listed, but some others are very different:

Buehrle:

19 CGs

757 Ks

297 BBs

.261 BAA

Zito:

9 CGs

989 Ks

490 BBs

.227 BAA

Also, Zito had one great year in 2002 (23-5, 2.75 ERA, 1.13 WHIP) that pads his stats a little, but since then he has gone 42-39. Buehrle was 19-12 in 2002, and he has gone 51-34 since 2002.

So they are pretty similar but they got there different ways. Mark is much more consistent.

Zito may of had that one great year but he also had 1 really bad year in 2004 (11-11, 4.48 ERA, 1.39 WHIP) which evens it out.

What? I'm not sure if that was sarcasm or not, but Zito isn't "hella better" than Buehrle.

I like the Tom Glavine comps better. Both Glavine and Buehrle beat their FIP numbers year after year by somehow "pitching to weak contact".

That's my two cents.

You have been Kalapse'd as they say.

Kalapse likes to talk sarcastically but rarely recognizes or lets on that he is talking sarcastically. So, basically, you can end up arguing with him over something he agrees with you over or you can argue with him over something he disagrees with you over. Either way, you are going to argue with him. :)

I think Zito is way overrated. Besides his great cy young year what has he done so great.

Give me Buehrle any day over Zito.

What is ERA+?

Interesting comparison. I think that Zito has better stuff, but Buehrle typically has better command.

I think that Mark is more comparable to Pettite. Both max out their fastballs in the low 90s', have good-but-not-devastating breaking balls, have solid changeups, and run the cutter in on right-handed batters.

What is ERA+?

The ratio of the league's ERA (adjusted to the pitcher's ballpark) to that of the pitcher so lgERA / ERA.

100 is about average, Jon Garland had a 105 ERA+ comming into this season.

SF1.

SF1.

Actually he's a lot more like Timo than Barrett.

If Kalapse is AJ, then I am Barrett just for one quick second.
