Jermaine Dye baseball's MVP?

Featured Replies

It's a long way to go, but if the season ended today, would Jermaine Dye be the league's MVP?

He has a .316 BA. He is second in the AL in homers (Behind Thome) with 19. He has 46 RBI (the league leader has 53....also Thome). He has a league leading .677 slugging percentage. A .411 OBP, top 10 in the league and a league best 1.086 OPS. (#2 on the list is Jim Thome).

Could you make a case for Jim Thome? What about other players around the league?

Discuss.

Numbers wise, he should be right up there. I just honestly can't see Jermaine Dye winning a MVP award, not to mention we have a long way to go. Jim Thome has a much better shot then JD imo.

Like I've been saying for quite some time now Jermaine Dye is the best hitter in baseball and as of now he is the MVP of the American League. Jim Thome is the only other player I can make a case for but Jermaine's absolutely filthy 1.101 OPS and .690 SLG are easily the best in baseball amongst active players.

JERMAINIA YOU ARE MY HERO!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, SEASON mvp award. Asshole. :)

If/when Thome gets his average up, there's no question he's getting the MVP, he has been a beast. But since Dye has been more consistant, then yes, I would give it to him. Ichiro (who has amazingly heated up) and Alex Rios are also very deserving.

I hope Thome and Dye go 1-2 in the MVP voting. They both deserve it. Maybe they could tie?

Its still wayy too early, but if Dye keeps it up he MIGHT have a shot. As far as Thome, I don't think he does even with is monster numbers. Look at Ortiz last year, his numbers were sick and was edged out because he is a DH.

DH = no MVP

ARod - .321 48 HR 130 RBI 124 R 21 SB(6 CS) .421/.610/1.031

Ortiz - .300 47 HR 148 RBI 119 R 1 SB(0 CS) .397/.604/1.001

ARod had better numbers in every category except RBI.

DH's can win the MVP...they just have to have better numbers than the next closest in line. If Thome hypothetically puts up .310 60 150 120 .450/.650/1.100, and the next closest puts up .310 45 130 120 .420/.610/1.030 while playing 3B, I'm not sure how you give the award to the 3Bman.

Yeah Ortiz would of won MVP in a lot of previous seasons but I think A-Rod was more deserving of it based on offense alone anyways. What especially put him over the top is the ability to get the SB.

Another good comparison would be 2000

Giambi - .333 43 137 108 .476/.647/1.123

Thomas - .328 43 143 115 .436/.625/1.061

Giambi was better in the saber categories than Thomas was by a sufficient margin, which didn't help Thomas at all, and in a case like this where the numbers are so close, Giambi playing defense probably did help his case.

However, if hypothetically Thomas hit .345, hit 50 homers, and drove in 160, there's not a chance in hell Giambi beats him.

It can be done...it just hasn't been done yet.

Well duh

Thomas should've been using too, cuz then he would've won it

Right now it is a close race between Thome and Dye with Hafner and Giambi right behind them. Looking at the ABs, it is hard to deny Dye's numbers.
