Indians "youth" myth

Featured Replies

So I'm watching the pregame, and Joe Morgan and Karl Ravech are talking about how "the young Indians are wilting under pressure of expectations" and how the team needs leadership. Umm.....I don't get it.

Age of Indians:

Casey Blake: 32

Travis Hafner: 29

Jason Michaels: 30

Ronnie Belliard: 31

Aaron Boone: 33

Ben Broussard: 29

Eduardo Perez: 36

Bob Wickman: 37

Rafael Betancourt: 31

Paul Byrd: 35

Jake Westbrook: 28

Guillermo Mota: 32

Jason Johnson: 32

Cliff Lee: 27

Victor Martinez: 27

Now Sabathia is only 25, Peralta 24, and Sizemore 23 (2 stars and somebody in Peralta that might still be one)....and they have some very young (and unproven) bullpen arms, but to say this team is young is a stretch. I bet in terms of average age, they are older than average (16th youngest or worse).

Just a thought.

Don't you get it? Conventional wisdom doesn't have to make sense!

Any time a team has a few young stars they will be called "young". The Tigers aren't really a young team (Todd Jones, Kenny Rogers, Pudge Rodriguez, Magglio etc) but people think of us that way because of Verlander, Zumaya, Bonderman and Granderson all playing major roles.

THe Indians have the same thing with Vmart Sizemore Sabathia etc

Young meaning MLB experience or established veterans..but yah we are younger than them

Sizemore...23

Peralta...24

Sabathia...25

Their team isn't bilt around Perez, MOta, Wickman, and Boone.

30 isn't that old. Their talent will be around awhile.

What is the average age for each each team along with major league experience?

Linky Here.

1. Florida

2. Texas

....

19. St. Louis

20. Chicago Sox.

21. Cleveland

Average age on Cleveland is 29.6. CHW is 29.4.

Oh, and we'd be even younger without Jeff Nelson.

Well, averages arent really that great of a tell tale sign. Maybe check out the median age as well.

If we're going with the experience argument, Sabathia is already in his 6th year in the league, so he's not exactly inexperienced. Peralta played for about 2-3 months in 2003 with the Indians as well.

They are not a young team by any stretch of the imagination, and they are not really that inexperienced...they have several guys who were playing with the team in 02 and 03 already, which is 3-4 years, and several of the others have just bounced around from place to place. They aren't a young team at all.

They're kind of in between, in that they're seasoned enough, and they'll be good for another 4-5 years.

They are some kind of over-rated.

But also we are the tallest team (tied for it), so that plays a factor as well. That and our team has some gigantic people in terms of height and weight (according to that site, Jenks 6'3, 280...Dye 6'5, 235....Thome 6'4, 245....A.J. 6'3, 235....Thornton 6'6, 230.....Jose 6'4, 245....Freddy 6'4, 250....Nelson counts at 6'8, 225).

Don't forget Big Jon at 6'6 218

Mark ain't a shrimp either at 6'2" 225
