He said the first missile was launched at about 3:30 a.m. today local time (2:30 p.m. EDT yesterday). If the timing is correct, the North Korean missiles were launched within minutes of yesterday's liftoff of Discovery, which blasted into orbit from Cape Canaveral, Fla., in the first U.S. space shuttle launch in a year.

Normally, when missile or space launches are carried out, the governments conducting the tests will issue international notices to airmen and mariners to avoid ocean and airspace where the tests are to be conducted. But North Korea does not follow the same missile-testing protocols as the United States or other nations.

 

They are looking to piss people off in ALL departments in one shot, eh?

I think they're pretty much used interchangeably now. I believe it was the military dictator who changed the name to Myanmar so that might have not been the will of the people. But I really don't know. Kramer and Jerry are probably still trying to figure that one out.

What I love about this story is at the end when they explain the possibilities.

 

1. North Korea wanted to show they could hit US targets by aiming close to Hawaii.

2. North Korea wanted to show they could hit the Pacific Fleet.

One thing is pretty clear... NK hasn't had the money to adequately fund the missle portion of their nuclear program. For myself I don't think NK would use it offensively, but was does scare me is the HUGE desparation for cash that they have, and them selling the technology to someone who would use it, such as an OBL led Al Qaeda or a spliter group with the same kind of ideology.

Our worry for nuclear proliferation lies with Pakistan. N. Korea got their technology from AQ Khan who ran the Pakistani nuclear program, then went and sold technology to Iran and N Korea. Currently being protected by the Pakistani government.

Let me throw this in the mix.

I'd say NK is more like a wild dog on China's farm. The dog will do all kinds of crazy s***, but is still scared to death of China. I don't think China wags NK as a puppet state, though. At most, China probably smirks at NK's act, when it suits them in some way.

It hasn't worked. To get into details, we captured AQ Khan - the President even made a big deal in the election two years ago about it. Then we gave him back to Pakistan. We aren't able to speak to him, question him or pump him for information in any way. And he isn't imprisoned as far as I know.

Of course it hasn't worked, which is presisely why we need to be making sure that the spread of nuclear capabilities doesn't happen. Talking about it hasn't worked at all, because it keeps ending up where we don't want to see it go, and into evermore dangerous hands. Very soon, someone is going to be attacked with a nuclear weapon, and then the finger pointing begins as to why they got ahold of this stuff in the first place.
