Films of 2006

Featured Replies

Overall, I think the Film Industry has seen better years than 2006, but I wouldn't necessarily call it a disappointment either. There were still some high-quality films, whether driven by dialogue or just flat-out entertaining. My favorites of the year are: Little Miss Sunshine, Thank You For Smoking, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, and Casino Royale.

My biggest surprise of the year was Lucky Number Slevin. A film that was much better than I expected, driven by biting dialouge (and a bit of stylized action), but still I found the aformentioned films to be better overall.

Another film that I was greatly impressed by was Casino Royale, which did make my favorites. I thought they did a brilliant job of completely revamping the Bond series, much like what was done with the Batman series. Daniel Craig was fantastic and I can't wait to see what he and the filmmakers do with the upcoming films. This may be the best Bond film I've ever seen.

Still haven't seen The Departed or Stranger Than Fiction. Just haven't found the time. If any of you guys have, please fill me in. Thanks alot.

So, after all of that, what are your favorites?

My two top faves would probably be Little Miss Sunshine and The Queen, mostly for Helen Mirren's amazing performance.

Snakes on a Plane

Jackass 2

Talledega Nights

Those are the first 3 that come to mind just thinking back a few months, those are in no particular order.

That's how it is. It's always on stand by.

No, it's never on. Should only go on when Nintendo updates the system or if you have a message.

Checked my IMDB vote list and I actually haven't seen that many movies from 2006 but The Departed, Babel and An Inconvenient Truth were my favorites.

Black Christmas.

Black Christmas.

My buddy loves bad horror movies and he hated this. If he hates a horror movie, it has to be bad.

There's a difference between bad horror movies and bad horror movies. I have a lot of friends that like bad horror movies, but they're the horror movies that aren't made for the mainstream, not there to make millions, but there because whoever made the film had a blast doing it. Horror movies like Black Christmas are made soley for money ... there is no style in it, there is no artistic integrity, and simply put, movies like that are absolute s***.

That said, nobody has mentioned the best film of the year yet: Letters from Iwo Jima.

And as far as the caliber of movies that came out in 2006, it was a down year. The Departed is a good flick, but doesn't stack up to Marty's best. Eastwood's films are also good, but neither match his monumental (for him, anyway) Million Dollar Baby. Little Miss Sunshine was average at best, but one of the best attempts to recreate Wes Anderson's humor that I've seen (too bad LMS didn't even come close to Anderson's film style).

As far as why people mention movies like Talledega Nights, I'll never know why. Will Ferrel is simply not funny, and if any of his movies should be mentioned, it's Stranger than Fiction.
