June 6, 200718 yr That's' Donald Veal, the Cubs top pitching prospect coming into the season, getting smoked by Birmingham. And FWIW, Jeff Samardzija hasn't been a whole lot better with an ERA near 6.00 and almost as many walks as strikeouts (16-to-20 in 50+ IP). Believe it or not their system is actually worse than ours, although they're going to add a real impact bat on Thursday in Josh Vitters.
June 6, 200718 yr I'm still a believer in Floyd. He's just got too good of stuff to suck so much. Any chance he could turn into a bullpen pitcher? He's got the stuff, a mid 90's fastball and a hammer... only if he could find the strike zone more often then not.

Also what a game for Collaro. I still don't think he's anything of a prospect, but at least he got to have fun singlehandedly beating the AA version of the Cubs in extras.
June 6, 200718 yr 0 walks? When someone posted stats in the 5th inning for Floyd in another thread I could have swore it said 4 walks.

June 6, 200718 yr QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 5, 2007 -> 11:48 PM) Floyd throws in the 90-92 range as a starter. From what I recall in ST, he hit 94-95 quite a few times...
June 6, 200718 yr Author QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Jun 5, 2007 -> 10:59 PM) Also what a game for Collaro. I still don't think he's anything of a prospect, but at least he got to have fun singlehandedly beating the AA version of the Cubs in extras. Yeah, he leads the Southern League in total bases by a decent amount but his OPS is still only .850. Not that .850 is bad, but usually when you lead the league in total bases it's quite a bit higher. What's interesting is that he is hitting .316 with a .341 on base at home as opposed to .260 and .283 on the road. Of course he is still slugging at a greater rate on the road, but he is still having a productive season. He's Joe Borchard without the walks, ugh.

Ya, Veal was really highly thought of when the Sox took him but he was pretty much an impossible sign at the time.
June 6, 200718 yr QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jun 6, 2007 -> 11:18 AM) Ya, Veal was really highly thought of when the Sox took him but he was pretty much an impossible sign at the time. Imagine if we had signed Veal and Wes Hodges who was a 13th round pick and Veal was the 12th. That would have been a very good draft class.
June 6, 200718 yr QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Jun 6, 2007 -> 10:21 AM) Imagine if we had signed Veal and Wes Hodges who was a 13th round pick and Veal was the 12th. That would have been a very good draft class. Hodges was rediculious. He breaks his hammate bone and almost immediately turns into a good hitter from the opposite side of the plate and now he's a switch hitter to boot.
