Is Felipe Lopez available ?

I read an article by Aaron Gleeman in which he predicted that the Sox would trade Mike MacDougal to the Nationals for Lopez.

I'm thinking that if the Sox could pull that off I would carry Mac on my back all the way to Washington.

But, Washington could really use pitching so the Sox could offer 2 or 3 of Mac, Sisco, Masset, Day etc. Would they take that ? Do they have a replacement for Lopez ?

I think he would be perfect for the Sox.

While I agree that he is inferior defensively to Uribe he is a major upgrade offensively. He's always been a very good offensive player and additionally he would become the Sox leadoff man and can easily steal 40 bases.

If that were the case, then Jerry Owens would not be a starting outfielder and leadoff hitter nor would Richar be the leadoff hitter - 2 things that would seriously impinge upon the Sox playoff chances.

Although with Lopez at SS they would probably want to sign a veteran 2B like Loretta or Iguchi. Perhaps Ozzie could help Lopez where he couldn't help Uribe due to his unique style.

Anyway, I would be for giving that a shot. I think overall the Sox would be better off with Lopez than Uribe. Offensively, he's far better for this team than any of the other options. The question would be could they live with his defense ?

He's only ever stole 40 bases once, and he's only been an above average offensive player once. Really, look at the numbers.

It appears for better or worse that Uribe will be back. I don't see any real upgrade defensively and powerwise over Uribe. However, the issue of Tejada from the Orioles is always an interesting debate. Uribe is a very good defender but has no plate discipline. He needs a boot in the rear a lot.

And let's not all act like there are not SS's available; as far as I can tell, there may be up to 5 or 6 shortstops available. Right now, I count Renteria, Furcal, Eckstein, Tejada, and then potentially any of Uribe, Greene, Lopez, and maybe even more lesser names. There are free agents out there, so that should not be something the Sox have to worry about.

Felipe Lopez is a switch hitter that just turned 27 and he coud still get better.

After eliminating the unreasonable ...i.e. Tejada, ARod etc. and the older/overthehill....i.e. Eckstein, Vizquel etc. the Sox can afford to take a chance on a guy like this that won't cost much right now but could develop into something really special.

Felipe Lopez is not the SS for a World Series team, secondbase maybe but he's one of the worst defensive infielders in the game, not exactly what you're looking for from the #1 or #2 most important defensive position on the field. And again you're then paying $4.5M to a 2B who's coming off a terrible season and doesn't really have a solid history of productive play to fall back on.

First, don't include Furcal and Renteria, who will actually be available and are significantly better than Lopez.

Secondly, why is Tejada unreasonable? The only reason I can think of is Peter Angelos.

I hate Felipe Lopez. He's not a winning baseball player. Terrible baseball IQ, bad attitude, HORRIBLE defensive player. If I recall correctly, he's been brutal against LHP in his career. I'm of the belief that Renteria, Tejada, or Furcal will be our SS next year.
