Ed DeBartolo's failed attempt to buy the Sox

Featured Replies

I am banned from White Sox Interactive ... Long story ... That's a bizarre little site over there.

Anyway ... they're trying to figure out why Edward DeBartolo's attempt to buy the Sox in 1980 failed. As with all matters in Sox history, one should turn to team historian (and great guy) Rich Lindberg to verify the facts.

On page 82 of "Total White Sox," Lindberg goes into great detail on the circumstances surrounding the sale. DeBartolo wanted to buy the team for $20 million and intimidated he was going to move the team to New Orleans. Commissioner Bowie Kuhn was also worried about DeBartolo's horse racing interests (even though many other owners had them) and -- according to Lindberg -- "seemed troubled" by other issues such as absentee ownership and organzied crime ties. The DeBartolo camp responded with charges of Italian-American bias.

Kuhn and DeBartolo exchanged bitter words with Kuhn saying he could get DeBartolo's bid rejected and DeBartolo countering by saying he could sue.

AL owners voted him down twice and the sale of the Sox eventually went to Reinsdorf's group. Some good did come out of this, though. During the time the sale was pending, the Sox signed free agents Ron LeFlore and Jim Essian.

That's the facts.

Congrats. Join the long list of banned members of WSI.

I like WSI quite a bit, but it is a lot more "keep it at arm's length" over there.

The two sites are both enjoyable, but you can't have the same approach at each site, for sure.

As I've said a few times, I'm very glad you're here, StatManDu!

I love it here. And thanks for the kind words.

I have never checked that site out. Why are so many people banned form there? Is it just a forum?

They won't really let you criticize the team over there. If you do they call you a "dark cloud." According to the people at WSI Ozzie and Kenny can do no wrong.

Oh yeah, it's a forum. If by forum, you mean the Kremlin in, say, 1954.

That's a bizarre little site over there.

Oh, yeah.

I got banned from WSI too. A few years ago they banned me for saying something like "a lot of people from indiana are hillbillys". When i found out i was banned i felt like WSI was communist Russia and the mods were stalin.

I did post over there in about 2003 or early 2004. I think it was the first site I found and then came across Soxtalk. I like it here much better. Although I don't have any negative to ssay about the other place it just didn't seem right for some reason. I sure don't have a problem with people expressing their feeling negative or positive as long as it doesn't become personal attacks, which I think our moderators keep good control over.

I just want to chime in here. We appreciate all the love you guys give Soxtalk, but let's not go overboard on bashing other guys' boards here. We are all Sox fans, some of us choose to express our appreciation differently. That's why there are different White Sox communities.

Rather than focusing your anger on other White Sox fans or their message board, why not focus it where it belongs? For example, on the Indians, or the Cubs, or, say, certain Chicago columnists who find themselves on ESPN all the time.

lol I love the Russia comment. And as for you statman, that was a great first sentence for that thread.

Who was it that wanted to move the Chisox to St Pete? Wasn't it DeBartolo? Or was that a former owner that wanted a new ball park?

Uh, that was Reinsdorf.

There are many times here that a more restrictive site seems like heaven. It seems that we are midway between all the boards, loose enough to be a community, strict enough to stop people from "running on the field". In other words, just right.

And Rex is right, they too care enough to create a place for Sox fans to meet.

I banned WSI from me, but that was my choice. I never felt comfortable over there and seemed to fit right in when I came over here. This is not a bash of WSI. It's just the way I felt. I hope they continue to be successful and that they enjoy what they have over there.

For the life of me I couldn't remember. So it was JR playing hardball

I was banned "for one week" by someone playing God and never went back. Still cant figure out why-but it was for the best-just way too many "chiefs" there with assumed authority.

And regarding this topic, I was really hoping for the DeBartalo thing to happen-we were just coming off and I was sick of the rent a player years and really wanted someone with $ to help us compete. It worked out well with the JR & EH group comin in, getting Fisk & Luzinski and changing our fortunes right away.

LOL at the list of 'banned' from WSI.

That site is ridiculous. I got banned 3 times and after the third time I just said screw that place and left.

I can't remember why I got banned the first time, but it came without warning of any kind (none of my bannings were preceeded by a warning).

The 2nd time I got banned it was because someone brought up politics in a thread (which is forbidden) and I RESPONDED to that poster to get the political crap out of the thread and was banned. The mere fact that I responded to a political comment (I quote the other posters post) though i didn't make one myself was why I got banned.

After I had gotten banned twice I tried to really be cautious and then got axed again when during the late season push in 2006 against Detroit I mentioned the Detroit score in a game thread and was sent packing for a week. Basically my post was something like this:

-Way to go Paulie...Sox back in it.

Dang, Detroit just put up a 2 spot in the 7th.

I wasn't the only one banned...anyone else who mentioned our main competitions current situation that night got a week off.

So I email the mod and asked what was going on. The interpretation was laughable and I just basically went off and told the dude the way the site was being run was a joke and to just ban me for life to which (upon just checking) they evidentally obliged. LOL.

You have been banned for the following reason:

No reason was specified.

Date the ban will be lifted: Never

I have been posting on various sites for years now and have never been banned at ANY of them, except for that one. That site is run by clowns.

Yup, if Thompson hadn't caved to build a new facility, the White Sox would be playing in the Tropicana Dome.

Yep...Count me among the ban-ees as well...Ironically, that site has a fabulous set-up. The Nostalgia is great, the interviews are good and some of the forums like Talking baseball, What's the score? and the Parking lot are worth reading on occassion. Ironically, the hardest thing to do over there is objectively discuss White Sox baseball. Part of the fun of being a fan is to criticize and discuss bone-headed moves like bad trades or management desicions that negatively affect the team. Instead, insipid things like "Where the best churros stand is" seem to be the norm over there.

I still lurk over there, but I noticed that many of the regulars over there from a few years back (whom I enoyed reading) are not to be found. Too bad.

I made one post at that place and got the boot. I'm pretty sure it didn't include anything Charles Manson would say.

I totally agree with you and it's what attracted me to that site to begin with. However, once I left I never EVER went back except just to check and see if my lifelong ban was still in effect, which it was. Im thankful for that as well, as I won't have any incentive to repost there and I have no interest in a 2nd username.
