well, he still must be injured, because this spring training, Dye's bat has looked slower then ever. I still think that 3 years, 30 some million dollar deal we gave him was f***ing stupid. We could really use those 2 draft picks (especially since we are losing one for the Linebrink signing, which I hate as well). We'll, I'm still excited about Quentin and he'll be fun to watch, whenever he gets healthy and gets his chance.

I'm not sure if you were watching the second half of the season last year, but he seemed to "re-learn" how to hit then...

Bull. Dye was banged up with minor injuries for most of the first half of last year.

 

bearsox, ST is not the end all to be all.

 

Just because Dye struggles in ST, doesn't mean he's going to suck this season.

 

Post ASB last season, his OPS was above .900 last season IIRC.

Because the roster doesn't have room for a backup DH and 3rd baseman...we're already carrying a couple guys who can back up at each of those positions. And say what you want about going down to AAA stunting Fields's growth...sitting on the bench and DHing once a week if we're lucky would be even worse.

Complain all you want, but we have some genuinely exciting young talent waiting in the wings. Quentin, Anderson, Fields, Richar, and Ramirez all have pretty high ceilings, and even Owens can be useful as a 4 OF/speed off the bench guy. Plus, we have Swisher locked up for a while. Seems like a good core of young players to me.

 

Trading Crede and/or Uribe for nothing is a stupid thing to do. KW is right to hang on to them, especially with the rash of injuries this Spring Training. He's betting on one team getting desperate, and giving up something of genuine value. It's a good risk to take.

 

And if no team bites, what's the problem in keeping Crede & Uribe? It's not like benching either or both of them is going to magically make us win 100 games. The offense will score enough runs. We're going to live and die by pitching, as most teams do. If we can't catch lightning in a bottle again, you can bet we'll find some takers for our veteran talent at the break. And other guys, like Cabrera, we can hang on to until the end of the year and grab some type A or B draft picks.

I still hold out hope that the Sox will be good this year, but the thing that I absolutely can't get over is the notion that Gavin Floyd will be a good pitcher. I have been pessimistic on him from Day 1. My pessimism goes right to the guy's career stats. He is what he is. His spring has been horrible, capped off by an embarrassing start today. I just don't get how Kenny could go into this spring and not even assemble the resemblance of a competition for the 4th and 5th starting pitcher slots. I love KW as the GM, but he tends to show an unexplainable and stubborn tendency to over-value guys. I remember being at Soxfest in 07 and hearing KW say that the MCCarthy trade was as much about getting Masset as it was Danks. Guess what? Massett sucks equally as bad as Floyd. KW, you are still the man, but cut out the B.S. and call a duck a duck. (btw - Toby Hall is also horrible)

My main argument here is that management has no gameplan. Now, I understand Kenny holds onto the weird notion that the White Sox are going to compete this year. That's fine, delusional GMs eventually get fired. However, have you ever seen a true title contender have so many question marks heading into a season? Absolutely not.

 

Yeah, I jumped around a lot, but this is a lot of stupidity for one offseason. If the White Sox do what we think they will (hover around .500 or worse) with their 3-5 starters all being huge question marks and a lineup that still tries to only hit homeruns aside from its 33 year old shortstop, what will we have to show for it? I believe another relatively high draft pick that we can combine with this year's high pick to trade for another guy who will help Mr. AARP Jim Thome and co. flounder toward a .500 finish. Maybe we'll throw Poreda into that trade as well.

I do not understand how most people can favor a trade for Swisher for top prospects, while many of these same people project the Sox as a .500 team at best and out of contention. He isn't afraid to be wrong. And when he's right, he has every right to gloat, I think. Sure, he's made some poor moves. Sure he's called out players or managers in public, but if not for Ozzie and Kenny, the White Sox would be ghosts. No one would give a crap about this team. Personally, I think it's fun to think about what Kenny could possibly have up his sleeve, even if it makes me cringe. Poor...no. Ballsy...yes.

It is a disgrace there's no spot for Fields. My preference was to not make the Swish

deal and let him play left and keep Crede at third.

You make a lot of good points, but hey ... this team still has some veteran presence.

If these vets are not over the hill and IF the bullpen can do something, we may

be a .500 team or better.

If the bullpen sucks and Thome, Paulie, Dye, AJP and Crede hit .250, yes we will

have one of the worst seasons in Sox history.
