This is more than just Palin, although I'm sure she was the tipping point. This whole effort to get Hillary supporters has turned out to be a waste of time, because there aren't many of them who haven't made up their minds already on what they're going to do. It's entirely possible that many of the women who switched to McCain now feel so pandered to and manipulated have just decided to sit the election out. That movement is an underrated aspect of the recent seperation in the polls, women aren't a monolithic voting block and apparently are resentful of those who treat them like one.

 

What Palin has done is energized the Republican base into a bit of frenzy. But all that does is get people who were going to vote for McCain anyways want to vote for him more, which really isn't the point of a campaign when it's all said and done.

I'll disagree with you on this point, because Karl Rove won 1 election by doing exactly that and narrowly lost another one.

I just dont see Palin being the wedge-issue or turnout machine that gay marriage was. Especially against a competent opponent like Obama as opposed to a dud like Kerry.

Yeah, there was a concerted effort to put Gay Marriage amendments on the ballot in swing states, to help boost turnout with conservative and evangelical voters. It worked in a lot of states.

And John McCain was forced to come back and pick a sort of Cheney-esque social conservative who's going to satisfy the base.

I think the fact that John Kerry said that proves that Palin was a great, maverick pick. Kerry's opinions should be ignored because of the fact he was awful enough to lose to George W. Bush after the nation had seen his abominable work for four years. Listening to his opinion on political decisions is like listening to Michael D. Brown talk about disaster response.
