The Mystery of Absinthe Revealed

Featured Replies

I was drinking absinthe a few weeks ago. For as high as the alcohol is, it is actually a very smooth drink. I like the stuff, but it will never be a regular drink. It's also still expensive as hell right now. I think I paid about $40 for the bottle I have.

Word of warning though, if you dislike black licorice or anise, stay well clear of absinthe.

I think you can still get the real stuff in Prague.

It probably one of the worst tasting most hyped alcohol of all time.

I did a couple shots of it while I was there. It's a freaking science fair for them to get it set up. There's sugar cubes and fire, way too much work. Anyway, I wasn't a big fan.

Yeah, they do that cause it tastes so damn bad.

A correctly poured glass of Absinthe is one of the most curious feeling ingested drinks I have ever had the pleasure of partaking. And yeah, I did it with the real stuff - in Prague. You can buy imported Czech absinthe legally in the US now, actually, its just quite expensive.

But the truth is that hallucinations don't come at first with Absinthe, only after repeated exposure at intoxicating levels. In other words, you gotta be really f'd up to see the green fairy. It's a different feeling to drink it, but the result is still the same in the end, you're just getting drunk.

I've never actually had it because I really hate anise/locorice flavored booze. I admit being intrigued by the history and the fact that it was Oscar Wilde's drink of choice and all that, but I'm sure I'll be let down when I actually get around to trying it.

Umm, it makes people hallucinate because it's 140 proof? 151 does nothing to me but get me plastered, but this s*** is supposed to make me trip? Please. I've had absinthe once, and while it does taste good (the sugar/water approach), it did nothing to me. I was extremely disappointed.

Also, a note on the taste...I hate licorice but I enjoyed the taste of Absinthe.

Uh, no. Its not supposed to make you hallucinate because its 140 proof.

Well, that's actually the substance of the linked article – that the hallucinogenic effects are much overhyped and it's really just good old high-octane, pink-elephant drunkennses.

They might be over-hyped, I dunno, I never tried. I was just saying that they don't say its a hallucinogen because it is a high-proof liquor. There's something else about the fermenting/ distilling process that is supposed to give it that quality.

yage, the ultimate spiritual high. :notworthy
