The Democrat Thread

At the How To Take Back America Conference last weekend, conservative speaker Kitty Werthmann led a workshop called “How to recognize living under Nazis & Communists.” Announcing the panel in a column preceding the conference, talk show host Janet Porter gushed how Werthmann’s description of Austria in the 1930s is a “mirror to America” today — noting “They had Joseph Goebbels; we have Mark Lloyd, the diversity czar.” The room was packed over capacity to hear Werthmann, who grew up as a Christian in Austria and serves as Phyllis Schlafly’s Eagle Forum South Dakota President.

During her session, Werthmann went through a litany of examples of how President Obama is like Adolf Hitler. She noted that Hitler, who acted “like an American politician,” was “elected in a 100% Christian nation.” Although she failed to once mention Antisemitism or militarism, Werthmann explained how universal healthcare, an Equal Rights Amendment, and increased taxes were telltale signs of Nazism. Werthmann also warned the audience:

Sheep led by a maniac. Fantastic.

The last sentence is incoherent.

Woodward's problem is that he has become the prime example of a "Villager". He's no longer interested in getting beyond the story that people are willing to tell him and pissing people off in the process...he's traded away that behavior in exchange for access.

There's not necessarily anything wrong with being a high level stenographer, those people should exist and do serve a purpose. And Woodward gets some interesting stuff when there is legitimate conflict occurring between the people he's interviewing, But there's just way too many of them today who aren't trying to get beyond what they're told.

this. and he lost major relevancy with me over this:

Woodward, the icon of investigative journalism, was shown in this case to be equally blinded by self-advancement. Eager to appear on shows dealing with the scandal, Woodward never revealed to either his editors or the public that he was involved in the case and knew who in the administration had shared information about Valerie Plame Wilson with reporters. Asked point-blank about any knowledge, Woodward at best failed to discuss what he knew and at worst lied about his knowledge. Like those he has covered, Woodward did not appear to hesitate in misleading other journalists in order to stay relevant and active in the scandal. He later apologized and explained that he was unnerved in watching so many reporters threatened with jail -- but that did not stop him from appearing widely on talk shows to hold forth on Plamegate. Woodward was only outdone in this regard by former Deputy Secretary of State Armitage, who turned out to have been one of Novak's original sources. Armitage allowed an investigation to rage and people to go to jail while he remained silent about his central role in the scandal.

I have to paraphrase Andrew Sullivan, who brought up a brilliant point. The most disgusting part of their misguidance, is that they are implying that the problem with Hitler wasn't his murder of millions of Jews, or his starting a world war, but his ECONOMIC POLICIES were what was wrong with him.

Yeah that's seriously f***ing retarded.

I bet if President Obama came out right now and said drinking 8 to 10 cups of water a day was the best way to stay healthy, some random Republican would immediately denounce this plan as a socialist plot to sabotage the soft drink industry. Beck would then lead a march on Washington where people will pour out bottles of water and drink Coke.

I don't agree with your view here at all. I much prefer we get more people delivering fact, and fewer people injecting their opinions. I'd rather make my own.

Well, cocacola is delicious. The American soda industry is the envy of the world, I'm not sure why Obama would want to destroy it.

I guess I don't see what to blame him for there. He may in fact be a raging asshole, I don't know, I just know he's better at his job than most folks I have seen try to write about recent political figures or administrations.

They're trying to link Obama to all of Hitler's atrocity through extremely weak ties in economics. Any mention of Hitler, no matter how unrelated, immediately conjures up fascism, oppression and the Holocaust.

The big problem is...what people say is not equal to fact. Playing stenographer doesn't take that in to account. That's how we got "Bush at war", that's how we got Bush's war, that's how we've gotten this whole mess that is our current media.

I wish people would just leave Hitler dead, and all related comparisons.

Down With Hitler Zombie!

I mean what does it say that one of the most important pieces of the decade appeared in vanity fair?

Indeed, Vanity Fair knows a nice piece when they see it.

A bit young for this Old Goat, yes. The cover was chosen to depict what comes to my mind when I think about the "pieces" spotlighted in VF.

That's Hitler Zombie. And I agree, it would be better if he just stayed dead.

I think you are missing the point of his writing, entirely. He is delivering information - quotes and statements from the horse's mouth included. His job is to get as much fact as he can, not make suppositions - this is why "Bush at War" was such an excellent book. If you didn't like it (and I suspect that's because it was not entirely negative against BushCo), I can understand, but it makes no snese to me to say that getting information from the people making those decisions is somehow less factual than the 100% guesswork that people outside that circle did.

I don't think that's what we are saying is better. But by trying to get all of it, the understanding of the decisions behind the war and the timeline of it, his focus was too broad and he was not the key player in any of the major stories of the time, even with his unprecedented access.
