Still waiting for the Senate or Obama to put forth the gun ban... or anything to do with guns.

Good. Now one more student can protect themselves from harm.

Thanks for the information Balta, I will make sure to watch for it.

why don't people like this get arrested and charged for treason?

Treason's pretty narrow.

Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort. No Person shall be convicted of Treason unless on the Testimony of two Witnesses to the same overt Act, or on Confession in open Court. The Congress shall have Power to declare the Punishment of Treason, but no Attainder of Treason shall work Corruption of Blood, or Forfeiture except during the Life of the Person attained.

The Virginia state senate is evenly divided between Democrats and Republicans, 20-20. Republicans really hate this, but what can they do? Answer: wait for a Democratic state senator to be absent and jam through a mid-decade redistricting plan that switches one seat from D to R by creating a new pack-and-crack majority black district just south of Richmond. The vote was 20-19.

But wait! That's not all. The deed was done on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and at the end of the session Republicans adjourned in memory of Confederate general Stonewall Jackson, whose birthday is today.

Oh, and did I mention that the state senator who was absent is a veteran of the civil rights movement? And that he was in Washington to attend the inauguration of our country's first black president?

Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell, who has obvious presidential ambitions, said he was surprised by the move, but didn't denounce it and didn't promise to veto it. Quite the contrary: his spokesman said the governor would "review it in great detail" once the bill got to his desk.

It's truly a mystery why so few African-Americans support the Republican Party, isn't it? A real chin-stroker.

Yeah that was in there.

It's a god-damned mystery why african americans don't vote for Republicans.

So they cannot honor the memory of someone who is still considered a hero because liberals dont like the timing?

god-damned mystery

Seneca, Selma and Stonewall

In his speech, Obama invoked the history of struggles for equality with a remarkable triptych: Seneca (women’s rights), Selma (black rights), and Stonewall (gay rights). And there has been remarkably little blowback — a sign of how much the country has changed.

What many people may not realize is how recent those changes are. Gay rights may be relatively obvious — it’s just 8 years since opposition to gay marriage arguably played a significant role in Bush’s victory. But the big changes on the racial front are also more recent than widely imagined (obligatory disclaimer — yes, there’s a lot of racism remaining, and it can be truly ugly; we’re just talking about relative changes). Here’s a poll trend that seems meaningful to me:

It wasn't until the mid-90's that interracial marriage became accepted by a majority of people in this country.

Who said they cant honor him?

Just if you honor a Civil War Confederate Hero, expect that people are going to call you out on supporting someone who was a Civil War Confederate. Of course historically speaking its not even clear whether Jackson supported slavery.

Both sides have a right to say what they want. No matter who stupid or ignorant it may be. That is the price of freedom.

Anyone else find it funny that Obama flubbed the "states" portion of his swearing in? Freudian slip?

Wow.

I wonder how different it would be if the question was, "do you approve of your child marrying someone of different racial background?" Even my dad, while not being a liberal hero he still is a rather non-bigoted man, once expressed concern that he wasn't sure if he'd be okay with a hypothetical daughter dating a black guy. He said that his childhood best friend was a black guy, he'd never personally known a bad black guy, but nonetheless it is true that in our hometown it would probably a ruin a girl's reputation. This is in Illinois of all places. In the 5-10 years since I brought up that hypothetical, I have a feeling that he feels completely different and wouldn't care so much about what everyone else thinks. I think this type of longitudinal polling shows that same sort of trend. While the raw number of people that approve has shot up, I have to assume the strength of the conviction in those other approvers has gone up as well. Some might have approved in theory but were still uneasy, but I bet now many more are actually fully comfortable with the notion.

This is one of the funnier things I've seen on the web thus far in 2013.

Allegedly another school shooting is occurring at a Houston area college.

Early reports are that it was a gun fight between 2 students with 2 other students being caught in crossfire.

The Wall Street Journal ran an article today breaking down the new tax policies from the Fiscal Cliff deal. Article itself was a fairly straight-forward, accurate and thorough explanation. What's funny about it is the graphic on the side:

Screen-Shot-2013-01-15-at-11.58.52-AM.pn

The lowest income on that chart is a single mother making $180,000 in wages and $35,000 in investment income alone. The people depicted are making several times the median household income, yet they look like someone just ran over their dog because their taxes are going up a little bit. I mean, am I really supposed to feel sorry for the married couple making almost 12 times the median, and over three times the median purely on investment income (enough to live very comfortably and never have to labor another day)?

The WSJ is ridiculous
