But I'm just curious how many people here would like to respond to an extreme situation with an extreme reaction... namely getting Owens in and potentially getting AJ lower in order, OC to 2nd.

Whether you work Owens in or not, if you make a change in CF, it should involve Anderson playing against lefties. Owens is the better offensive player but Anderson more than makes up the gap with his defense and that's especially true against lefties, where the offensive gap is far smaller.

 

I don't really think Owens is what the offense is missing right now. Also I don't think he's our best lead off hitter. To think either or both of those things are true, you have to place a lot of value on stolen bases.

 

If the issue is how to place Paully, I think we should go with someone like Fields to try to replace the power bat we'll be losing, or improve our poor outfield defense.

Even Willie hit .400 in AAA. You'd think Owens would at least luck into a few XBH.

yep, willie is jerry owens except 100 times better. basically he can actually hit a little and is adequate defensively.

Owens' september last year may not be better than BA's best pro month offensively, but it was definitely the sort of thing that would be immediately helpful for us at this moment. Just barely even station-to-station at this point.

If Paulie's out for awhile, the point is you'd want an extreme move to see if you could put a charge into things. Give our RBI guys someone to knock in.

 

 

If Owens can get on 35% of the time and steal bases, for a few weeks here...you have to acknowledge that as helpful to our cause right now.

I think I would move Griff to LF and have Brian just play CF. Have Wise and Owens pinch run.

Here's the problem.

 

Owens has been hurt this year. Legs, or something like that. He's only 18/28 in steals in AAA.

 

Those aren't good numbers. He's not helping this team if he is getting thrown out 40% of the time and getting on base 35% of the time.

Let BA play as a regular, just once. He has never had that opportunity. Even in his "full season," he could hardly string 3 consecutive games together. Let the kid play for a while, you might like what you get with some consistent AB's.

In his 2nd callup last year he pushed a .340 OBP as a rookie. That's actually almost exactly what we've gotten out of the #1 spot all year. Getting on base isn't his problem...it's doing something in the process, whether it's being healthy enough to run or accomplishing anything via the hit.

I'd say there is no excuse for starting Swisher over Anderson right now. Griffey's bat is better then Swisher, and Griffey provides as good, if not better D in the OF (I'd say better).

Even if you want to just look at Swisher in August (or September, although that would be rather useless given the size):

August: .224/.337/.539

September: .250/.304/.600

 

Hell, even if you want to look at Griffey's whole season (.247/.353/.417), Swisher is still the better offensive player (albeit more slightly).

 

Really, it's not even close.

I'll take Griffey over Swisher anyday of the week as Griffey actually has a good approach to when he comes up to bat. Swisher just stands there letting good pitches go, hoping to draw the walk. Griffey actually wants to hit the ball.

Terrible logic, but if you really want to take a worse offensive player, I guess that's your choice.
