A-Rams ROY case better without Quentin

Featured Replies

After watching the White Sox the last few games without Carlos Quentin, I see everyone is picking up the power numbers that he had. No more than our rookie 2nd baseman A-Ram. He just hit his 18th home run of the season and is batting over .300 still. Longoria was on the shelf but the Rays played fabulous until late and now he is back and the team is streaky(thats what I have seen, just an opinion). Since Ramirez has raised his game to fill the void left by Quentin, will this help him go over the top as the Rookie of the Year winner?

IMO, if you give Longy the ROY, then you give Q the MVP (when we make playoffs).

I still think Q should get it if we make the playoffs. You can't argue that without him we wouldn't be here, and I can't think of another guy on a playoff team with that much of an impact. And if you don't give it to him because of the injury, then you can't give Longoria the ROY because of his (strikingly similar) injury.

Alexei Ramirez is hitting .245 since Quentin went down with his injury, sure he has 3 HR over that 13 game span but I'd hardly call that "raising his game."

Longoria has been back all of 5 games, not really sure how a team can be "streaky" over a 5 game period but he hit .364 in his first 4 games back so I doubt he's been a part of the problem. Evan has easily been the better player this season both at the plate and in the field so he should probably win the award with Armando Galarraga and his 122 ERA+ being the wild card.

Why? Even with his injury Longoria still has 452 plate appearances this season compared to Alexei's 461. It's not like he's put up his numbers in significantly fewer PA than the competition. Carlos is going to finish with 120-150 fewer PA than the other MVP candidates, that's a pretty damn big difference. I agree with you that even with this large difference in playing time that Carlos has still been the most valuable player in the American League this season but the two situations are not comparable.

Why is Jermaine Dye not an MVP candidate? Obviously he is, but he's been nearly as valuable as Quentin has. He's just so damn quiet that he doesn't even seem to garner the consideration for the award. I'm really interested to see who it's awarded to, so that's something I'll be looking forward to.

As it is, I just hope Pedroia does not get it. He could very easily get it and you would not hear an argument from me, I just hate his ass. How can you be that good at baseball when you are 5'6?

Luckily Quentin is so charismatic, otherwise no one would have noticed his season.

point noted and understood, but have you considered Dye as an MVP candidate? Most seemingly haven't and that's just a bit sad as far as I'm concerned.

rather him than morneau again. if we win the div, he shouldnt win it nor do i think he should.

The ROY and MVP awards are quite different. There are always going to be multiple MVP candidates. That's not the case with ROY. Longoria should get it IMO. Quentin, unfortunately, was taken out of the race.

If Quentin wasn't on the team, then Jermaine would be. However, Dye hasn't even been the best player on his team for the entire season, so it's tough to consider him for the MVP.

Dye is hitting for absolutely NO power this month (.352 slugging, 4 doubles, 5 RBI, no homers in 14 games). His inability to stand out since Q got hurt has killed whatever small chance he had at MVP. And yeah, Longoria is ROY and it's not really even close. You don't hold the time missed against Longoria because it was later in the season, while at the same time ignoring all the time on the bench Ramirez had earlier in the season, it's not fair to look at it that way. I think Ramirez probably should finish 2nd over Galarraga, but not over Longoria for 1st.

OH Kalapse, you are always such a buzzkill with all your facts and statistics. You are like a f***ing encyclopedia of baseball knowledge sometimes. :D

And I do mean that in a good way BTW.

If Morneau wins the MVP, I promise to kill something. He didn't deserve it in 2006, and he doesn't deserve it this year.

Other than him, I couldn't care less who wins it. Q deserves it, but this injury probably killed his chances (even though we wouldn't even be in this race without him).

Oh, and while Alexei has been great this year, he's the third best offensive option for Rookie of the Year. Both Longoria and Denard Span have been better.

Why doesn't Morneau deserve it? It seems like whenever I'm reading about the Twins, that it's Morneau coming up with the big hits and scoring all the runs. He's pretty goddamn good.

As much I personally dont want Morneau to win the MVP, I have a hard time saying he doesnt deserve it this year, especially with TCQ missing Sept. He leads the AL in RBI on a team with a weaker lineup, that nobody expected to be in the playoff hunt into the final week of the season. I know the starting pitching has carried them, but his bat in the cleanup spot has definitely helped a lot too.

Morneau is undoubtedly the most valuable to his team of any of the players in the MVP discussion. That offense outside of him is pathetic. The only stat categories he doesn't lead in is OBP (2nd to Mauer), AVG (2nd to Mauer), and 3B (1 behind). He leads in GS, AB, R, H, 2B, HR, RBI, and SLG. Most of these categories are far ahead as well. He's the most valuable player, but as we know, that doesn't mean he'll take the MVP. I'd vote for him though.

That's funny because he sure seems to come to the plate in a whole lot of RBI situations.

Morneau: Total PA: 661, PA w/ men on: 367 (56%), PA w/ RISP: 213 (32%)

Quentin: Total PA: 569, PA w/ men on: 245 (43%), PA w/ RISP: 149 (26%)

Dye: Total PA: 592, PA w/ men on: 276 (49%), PA w/ RISP: 159 (27%)

For a "weaker" lineup they sure do get their big time hitter an awful lot of RBI opportunities and many more than The Sox provide their two best hitters.

Morneau has only had two months where he owned an OPS over .900: May and July. Other than those two months, his season has been good, but not spectacular. He is 9th in the AL in OPS, behind players on other contenders such as Jermaine Dye, Carlos Quentin, and Kevin Youkilis.

Even if you want to talk close and late, he's not doing that great among the candidates that are on potential playoff teams:

Morneau: .298/.356/.479/.835

Youkilis: .267/.374/.547/.921

Quentin: .351/.448/.757/1.205

Dye: .291/.364/.456/.820

I hate the Twins as much, if not more, than anyone here, but Span has been great this year. I don't think he'll get the same recognition as Alexei or Longoria because he doesn't have the same playing time, but he really has had a hell of a season.

For comparisons sake:

Span: .295/.384/.433/.817 in 305 AB

Alexei: .298/.320/.480/.800 in 440 AB

I wont deny that Span has been great, but i dont feel he's been better than Alexei. Their splits are fairly similar, but Alexei has had 135 more ABs, which shows he has sustained it longer. I know they have different roles (Span: leadoff; Alexei: run producer) but I just feel you need to acknowledge Ramirez' HR and RBI total here. Also, I dont know about Span's defense but Alexei has been great and has made a few phenomenal plays this year. If you want to make an argument for Galaraga i'd be more willing to listen, but i really do feel Alexei should be #2 in ROY voting.

I'd go:

1) Longoria

2) Ramirez

3) Galaraga

4) Aviles

5) Span

Alexei has 3 HR in the 15 games since Quentin went down, Evan Longoria has 3 HR TONIGHT.
