October 2, 200817 yr QUOTE (joesaiditstrue @ Oct 2, 2008 -> 05:58 PM) What an outing by Clayton, in the post-season no less. He had 5 K's in the first 1 2/3 innings that he pitched. Sick Imagine if he had started the game. Tampa got to him the 2nd time around, so I will reserve judgement on what could have been and give him credit for the 1 2/3 innings.
October 2, 200817 yr QUOTE (Sox It To Em @ Oct 2, 2008 -> 03:59 PM) He's got a great shot at making the rotation next year. I wouldn't mind Javy gone with Richard in. But that means you would have to get another #2-type pitcher in FA or a trade.
October 2, 200817 yr QUOTE (Sox It To Em @ Oct 2, 2008 -> 03:59 PM) He's got a great shot at making the rotation next year. I was going to say that. He is auditioning for a spot as our #5 next year.
October 2, 200817 yr Author QUOTE (rangercal @ Oct 2, 2008 -> 04:00 PM) Tampa got to him the 2nd time around, so I will reserve judgement on what could have been and give him credit for the 1 2/3 innings. They swung at the first pitch, that's not really "getting to him", more than changing their approach. I'm not ready to say that Clayton can't make adjustments himself
October 2, 200817 yr but they were getting to him 3rd time through. i like Clayton and I salute the effort, but until he gets one more pitch...
October 2, 200817 yr Wasn't too long ago that people on the board were chasing him around with forks in their hands.

October 2, 200817 yr He will work as a reliever until he develops that next pitch. He desperately needs that IMO to be anything more than a reliever.
October 2, 200817 yr He's not a starter, but he could be a hell of a guy out of the pen. Seemed like every time he'd start he'd have a solid first 4 innings or so then fall apart. That has bullpen written all over it.
October 2, 200817 yr QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Oct 2, 2008 -> 05:04 PM) He will work as a reliever until he develops that next pitch. He desperately needs that IMO to be anything more than a reliever. He has 4 pitches (fastball, slider, changeup, and curve) and all of them were working well in the minors. He has thrown all of them up here too. In fact, I'm looking at a stats analysis of the September 9th game he had against Toronto. He threw 53 pitches over 4 innings: - 38 fastballs (24 for strikes) - 8 changeups (all 8 for strikes) - 6 sliders (5 for strikes) - 1 curve (not a strike) I get the feeling he just needs to develop the confidence in the offspeed stuff at the major league level, because they're not bad pitches. If he adds a cutter like Danks did in the offseason and mixes that in with his fastball, changeup, and slider, he could be quite a helpful addition to the staff next year. Like Danks last year, Richard needs an effective pitch to throw to righties. The cutter could be the ticket. Edited October 2, 200817 yr by scenario
October 2, 200817 yr QUOTE (scenario @ Oct 2, 2008 -> 06:02 PM) Wasn't too long ago that people on the board were chasing him around with forks in their hands. That's because he looked like a giant hot dog in a bun.
October 2, 200817 yr If we can get another solid inning eater in our rotation next year, I wouldnt mind seeing him in the fifth spot next year. However if that is the plan, I would like to see us take several flyers on pitchers coming off injury or after a down year for insurance.
October 2, 200817 yr If we lose Contreras for 2009 then I would like to see us move Javy, put Richard in at #5 and sign Lowe. He might be in the 3/39 range that Kenny hunts for. I want Javy and Thome both gone. We need consistency.

I don't know if he'd play as well in the Cell...but if we're spending some money, going after one of the better sinkerballers out there isn't a bad option.
October 2, 200817 yr Author QUOTE (Hawkfan @ Oct 2, 2008 -> 04:29 PM) my hats off to him for saving our bullpen. Thats it. that's it? this was a f***ing PLAYOFF game, i don't think you're seeing the whole picture here

October 2, 200817 yr This thread is a joke. Is this the same Richard that sports an era of over 6? He had a couple of nice innings in a game that we were trailing by 3 before eventually remembering he's Clayton Richard and loading the bases before being taken out. If he starts the game we still lose.
October 2, 200817 yr He saved our pen. He didn't flinch. We can worry about where he fits next year, next year. But there's always a place for a lefty that can throw strikes -- at league minimum.

October 2, 200817 yr Selective memory? Richard doesn't suck? An era over 6? A WHIP of 1.55? BAA of over .300? He's garbage. A typical White Sox farmhand. And we've got people saying he should've started game 1 of a playoff series because he pitched a couple of nice innings?
October 2, 200817 yr I think if he learned a cutter or something he could very well be a beast. Like I said in the game thread the kid has some serious moxy and works very fast.
