If KW went into this without thinking he'd have to pick up the option then he wasn't thinking things through. There are certain players the organization is willing to make a leap for, and Peavy is one of them.

exactly. If this rumor is true then it's done either way. If he's been working on this for as long as some say it probably crept into his and the owners minds that this was going to be an issue.

I'd prefer to give up Corky all together. Let him be Peavy's personal servant or something.

Maybe add another year to the contract and hold the salary at $18MM for 2012,2013, and 2014? Still alot of money but the only way that we can reduce the annual amount is to add more time and guranteed money. An extension can always be worked out later as well to reduce the Sox obligation for 2013.

Considering that Dye, Konerko, Thome, Contreras, A.J., Linebrink, and Dotel will be off the books towards the end of Peavy's contract, it's not a question of whether or not the Sox can afford his contract with the option year. It's a question of whether or not Kenny wants to commit that kind of money to a guy with 1300 innings on his arm. I'd be more worried about his long-term duability than the money. You can always trade a healthy pitcher.

Yeah, this wouldn't be a PR move. There is way too much risk in Peavy declining. It basically says "hey world, the White Sox suck!"

Look at how good Zito, Hudson, and Mulder were when they went to the NL.

 

Sure, there is something to the ERA goes up in the AL, that'll happen when you face no pitchers, but a lot is being made out of nothing. In the end, it was about green, and the Sox had to know it'd come to that option.
