May 21, 200916 yr QUOTE (G&T @ May 21, 2009 -> 01:13 PM) If KW went into this without thinking he'd have to pick up the option then he wasn't thinking things through. There are certain players the organization is willing to make a leap for, and Peavy is one of them. exactly. If this rumor is true then it's done either way. If he's been working on this for as long as some say it probably crept into his and the owners minds that this was going to be an issue.
May 21, 200916 yr QUOTE (dmbjeff @ May 21, 2009 -> 01:12 PM) Think Corky will give up his number? That may be the sticking point. I'd prefer to give up Corky all together. Let him be Peavy's personal servant or something.
May 21, 200916 yr Maybe add another year to the contract and hold the salary at $18MM for 2012,2013, and 2014? Still alot of money but the only way that we can reduce the annual amount is to add more time and guranteed money. An extension can always be worked out later as well to reduce the Sox obligation for 2013.
May 21, 200916 yr Obama's a Sox fan....can't he just give the team a $22 miilion bailout to get this deal done??
May 21, 200916 yr QUOTE (BearSox @ May 21, 2009 -> 01:16 PM) I'd prefer to give up Corky all together. Let him be Peavy's personal servant or something. can we throw corky and henry blanco in the deal too?
May 21, 200916 yr QUOTE (BearSox @ May 21, 2009 -> 02:14 PM) Unless as someone else stated, it's a PR move by Kenny to show the fans he's "trying". If this were a PR move, this is bad PR. I will be pretty pissed when/if Peavy rejects this. This is a f***ing cocktease and whoever let this leak better not be Kenny.
May 21, 200916 yr QUOTE (Baines3 @ May 21, 2009 -> 01:14 PM) We have everything to gain by getting Peavy. Like an extra point and a half on his ERA once he leaves Petco and comes to the AL at the cell?

May 21, 200916 yr QUOTE (BearSox @ May 21, 2009 -> 11:12 AM) He'll be making 17 million guaranteed no matter what in 3 years anyway. It's a lot of money, but if you want a true ace, that's the price you have to pay now a days. Considering that Dye, Konerko, Thome, Contreras, A.J., Linebrink, and Dotel will be off the books towards the end of Peavy's contract, it's not a question of whether or not the Sox can afford his contract with the option year. It's a question of whether or not Kenny wants to commit that kind of money to a guy with 1300 innings on his arm. I'd be more worried about his long-term duability than the money. You can always trade a healthy pitcher.
May 21, 200916 yr QUOTE (rangercal @ May 21, 2009 -> 01:17 PM) If this were a PR move, this is bad PR. I will be pretty pissed when/if Peavy rejects this. This is a f***ing cocktease and whoever let this leak better not be Kenny. The original source was out of San Diego, so it was most likely a Pads exec or player that first got this out in the open.
May 21, 200916 yr QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ May 21, 2009 -> 01:17 PM) Has a player ever waited this long to make this decision. zoinks McGriff with the Cubs, Giles with the Red Sox last year, Schilling at one point... Peavy isn't even taking that long and it seems like he's made it, option and some trips to Chicago for his family (my guess at the other "sweets" he wants) and its yes, no option, then no
May 21, 200916 yr QUOTE (Markbilliards @ May 21, 2009 -> 01:18 PM) Like an extra point and a half on his ERA once he leaves Petco and comes to the AL at the cell? But we'll be losing all that money to pay him, so it washes out.
May 21, 200916 yr QUOTE (Markbilliards @ May 21, 2009 -> 02:18 PM) Like an extra point and a half on his ERA once he leaves Petco and comes to the AL at the cell? Scott Linebrink.. Prime Example

It basically says "hey world, the White Sox suck!"

May 21, 200916 yr QUOTE (Markbilliards @ May 21, 2009 -> 01:18 PM) Like an extra point and a half on his ERA once he leaves Petco and comes to the AL at the cell? How do pitchers like Buehrle and 2008 Floyd and Danks and 2005 Contreras and most of our bullpen and so on succeed here, then? Would they all have ERAs below 2 in the NL?

May 21, 200916 yr QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ May 21, 2009 -> 01:19 PM) Went to lunch...anything new? there was an update that Peavy wants the option picked up as a starter, which I would imagine would be trips to Chicago for his family, etc. and someone said Peavy didn't show up to a Pads gym or something (that was out of SD) Edited May 21, 200916 yr by SoxFan562004

Would they all have ERAs below 2 in the NL? Look at how good Zito, Hudson, and Mulder were when they went to the NL. Sure, there is something to the ERA goes up in the AL, that'll happen when you face no pitchers, but a lot is being made out of nothing. In the end, it was about green, and the Sox had to know it'd come to that option.

May 21, 200916 yr If we had put a good showing today against the Twins, I would have to imagine that could have helped a little.
