Must Read Sports Books

Featured Replies

What sports related books do you consider classics...the must reads?

For example, perhaps Moneyball or various Bill James tomes for baseball.

Non-fiction preferred.

God Save the Fan by Will Leitch

Ball Four

A few sports books I really enjoyed...

The Bad Guys Won- book about the 1986 mets...pretty good

Boys will be Boys- Dallas Cowboys 90's dynasty

Both of those are by Jeff Pearlman, I really liked both of em.

Also...IS This a Great Game or What- Tim Kurkjian

Baseball biggest blunders by Rob Neyer or any of his other books

Juiced by Jose Canseco

I'll probably draw some ire for this, but... Beyond the Sixth Game, by Peter Gammons

God Save the Fan is excellent

The baseball economist is a super interesting, but a little dull (for non econ majors).

The numbers game is a book every baseball fan should read.

Walter Payton's posthumous bio.

You'll cry.

Once a Runner -- For all the runners out there. It's a classic.

reading "The Breaks of The Game" based purely on Bill Simmons's recommendation.

The Hammer by Dave Schultz.

A good read about the goon era in the NHL in the 70's, as well as his personal dichotomy - wanting to play a "cleaner" game but at the same time enjoying the spoils of being the #1 goon in the league.

I've heard some great things about Born to Run. I really want to check it out, as I've really gotten obsessed with running this year.

Meat Market is fantastic for anyone interested in college football recruiting.

That one looks very good. I am currently reading Running with the Buffalos, a running book about the University of Colorado XC team. Once I get done with that one, I may have to check that one out.

Is this a nice way of saying "enough already"?

:D

Scout's Honor

Dollar Sign on the Muscle: The World of Baseball Scouting

Insightful reads.

I bought that book, but haven't read it yet. I plan on getting it done sometime before the movie comes out. But, I still have The GM to finish (in terms of sports books). That's a pretty good one too. It's about Ernie Accorsi's time making his way through the NFL ranks until his last season as the GM of the Giants.

A Few Seconds of Panic by Stefan Fatsis.

Its about a 43 year old writer who participated in the Denver Broncos training camp in 2006 as a Kicker. Great look at what training camp is all about in the NFL. Some decent info on what type of guy Jay Cutler is as well. A quick and great read.

Men with balls by drew magary

Trust me...

As I am, read "God Save the Fan." it's a must read

  • 3 weeks later...

The Last Night of the Yankee Dynasty (Buster Olney)

Three Nights in August (Buzz Bissinger)

Rebound: The Odyssey of Michael Jordan (Bob Greene)

Also, Jose Canseco's Juiced speekz da truff.
