Your all 2009 'Under the Radar" squad

Basically, you come up with a list of 10 players (pitchers included) regardless of position having above average, or in some cases, outstanding seasons, that have gotten little to no national recognition (I.E. they don't play for the NY teams or the Red Sox). Here's my list from 10th best to best:

10: Nick Markakis - .305 BA, 41 2B, 16 HR, 89 RBI, .356 OBP, .479 SLG, .835 OPS

9: Aaron Hill - .285 BA, 31 HR, 85 RBI, .497 SLG

8: Jason Bartlett - .337 BA, .913 OPS

7: Michael Young - .326 BA, 35 2B, 22 HR, .908 OPS

6: Ryan Zimmerman - .299 BA, 27 HR, 90 RBI, .901 OPS

5: Huston Street - 33/34 save chances, 10.40 K/9, 2.25 B/9, 4.67 K/BB

4: Ubaldo Jiminez - 12-10, 3.33 ERA, 7.84 K/9, .230 BAA, 1.22 WHIP

3: Mark Reynolds - .280 BA, 40 HR, 90 RBI, .882 OPS

2: Kendry Morales - .311, 34 2B, 30 HR. 91 RBI, .948 OPS

1: Josh Johnson - 13-3, 3.04 ERA, 7.81 K/9, 2.15 BB/9, 3.63 K/BB, .235 BAA, 1.11 WHIP

I don't know about Young and Zimmerman. Both made the All-Star team.

I really like both Reynolds and Morales.

David Aardsma

Mike MacDougal

Nick Masset

Javier Vazquez

BTW, Markakis is actually having kind of a down year. His OPS was around .900 last year. He didn't hit for great power earlier on this year.

3 of the 4 are pitching in the NL. That doesnt count. And MacDougal isn't really having a good season with the Nationals, seeing how his K/9 is 4.82 and his BB/9 is 4.82. If anything, it means he's been lucky as hell and he's bound to come back down soon enough.

Aardsma has been solid as hell, and I never wanted to give him up. FWIW.

To get back to the topic, Clint Barmes has 21 homers. He's not having a good year, I just thought it was crazy that Clint Barmes has 21 homers.

The RBI stats look great, but I expected more from Markakis.

Everybody sweats Josh Johnson pretty hard, too.

Michael Young is obviously a known commodity, when healthy.

The other seven guys have exceeded expectations, to various extents.

True. But Freddy Sanchez made the all-star team a couple times I believe. Just sayin' these are guys who you've heard very little about all year (unless you're a diehard). Morales and Reynolds have come outta nowhere to have MVP-caliber seasons. And Josh Johnson should get some CY votes.

True. The power is down. But all his other numbers are really good. He's one of my favorite players. And when the O's start obliterating the AL in 2-3 years he'll have quite a bit to do with it.

Markakis had only two HR from May 10 to July 17.

He also has only 4 SB up to this point. Meanwhile, Kevin Youkilis has the same amount. Pretty atrocious considering that Nick is a potential 20 SB guy.

He should be in the .875 to .925 OPS range, but instead, he's at .835, and he was under .800 through mid-July.

I'll be expecting much more from him next year.

Really? I'd say he's become one of the bigger stars this season. The nickname doesn't hurt.

But he wasn't thought of before this year.

Exactly. Pablo Sandoval is a terrific mention.

If he existed.

It's schematics, but OP mentioned "under the radar" guys that haven't gotten national recognition. Kung Fu Panda has gotten plenty of that this year; I think we can all agree on that.

It would make more sense for Pablo Sandoval to be on his original list over Markakis, Young, Johnson, Reynolds, etc.

Not 100% sure on the author's original intent, but this turned into a "Players Who Have Exceeded Expectations" thread, and Pablo Sandoval is pretty much headlining it.

John Lackey.

Kubel, K. Morales, Willingham, Reynolds no doubt.

Lackey was hurt for a while and sucked when he came back. He's only been good recently. I don't know...

Kubel's a very good mention.

Ryan Franklin has some sick numbers this year.
