Rafael Soriano to Tampa Bay

Featured Replies

Been a busy night;

SI.com's Jon Heyman reports arbitration-eligible reliever Rafael Soriano has been traded to the Rays.

The deal is pending a physical, which probably won't go down until Thursday or morning or afternoon. It's not yet clear who the Braves are getting in return, though right-hander Jesse Chavez's name has been thrown around. Soriano should contend for the ninth-inning job in Tampa Bay. He had a 2.97 ERA, a 1.06 WHIP and a 102/27 K/BB ratio in 75 2/3 innings this past year.

I'm sure this will probably eliminate the Jenks rumors unless the Rays trade Burrell (freeing up money), or they feel Soriano is better suited as a set-up guy (or Jenks) and want to spend more money on the bullpen.

How good is Jesse Chavez? This looks like a steal for Tampa Bay.

He had similar, though slightly worse, numbers than Pena last season.

For Atlanta, they wanted two 1st round picks for Soriano, but ending up with an MLB ready reliever probably works for them too.

They're not going to be able to trade Burrell without taking back a similar salary (Milton Bradley). Regardless, they're not gonna pay Soriano, who's going to make at least 6.5 million, and Jenks another 7-8 million. That just doesn't make sense for a team that is obviously limited when it comes to their payroll. Great move for the Rays. Soriano is filthy good when healthy. He and Howell should make up a nasty 1-2 punch at the end of games.

When the f*** did Tampa trade Iwamura. Man I would've loved to get in on that action.

Did they trade him? I thought he was a FA pickup by the Pirates

I thought I saw that they got Chavez for Iwamura.

Braves didn't have the money to keep Soriano.
