Freddy Garcia's Interesting talent

Fangraphs - Freddy Bloody Garcia

Interesting stuff from fangraphs.

I'm not smart enough to articulate everything this article is stating, but apparently, Sweaty Freddy gets about as much out of his talent as any other starting pitcher in the league...and this is not a new thing for him, but rather, something he has done for the majority of his career.

This list greatly resembles the one we looked at last week — with one exception, that is: Freddy Bloody Garcia. Granted, he only pitched 56 IP through nine starts last year, but it appears to be a skill he’s carried throughout his career, as his 46.5% lifetime mark suggests.

So that’s one thing. Now here’s another question of some interest, I think: Which pitchers posted the biggest O-Contact%/Z-Contact% splits in 2009? In other words, which pitchers are best at getting swinging strikes outside the strike zone despite allowing somewhat frequent contact within it. Truly, this would be a list of pitchers who use their talents most efficiently, getting swings and misses outside of the zone, where they are more valuable

Interesting indeed. We always wonder how he hangs in there :)

He won't be the Freddy of old, but he showed us he can still pitch and his ability to throw pure junk balls is pretty darn effective. I'll take him as a #5 :)

Very interesting article.

Garcia does throw some pretty good breaking stuff.

We all know sweaty Freddy can pitch, even though he has nothing left in terms of velocity.

I'm just glad we have the depth. I'm honestly comfortable with him or Hudson heading into ST and to the season. It's good to know the rotation is the last thing we all have to worry about (man.. how long has it been since we said that about our 1-5?) or the last thing that is questioning this team. (Danks [circulatory/blister in finger] and Floyd [hip], injury wise were answered this fall/winter thankfully)

There was a good article from THT a few months back similar to this stating how Freddy has basically had to change his makeup with his diminshed stuff and is still getting pretty good results.

A healthy Freddy Garcia as #5 in our rotation is truly exceptional.

Freddie always has had good movement. That and location and mixing them up makes Freddie a good pitcher. He is a very slow and deliberate worker on the mound and couldn't be anymore opposite of MB in that regards, but I think it's good to have the variation in your staff

This isn't surprising. When your FB tops out at 88 MPH on a good day, you damn well better have some pretty good off-speed stuff. I would imagine Freddy's split-fingered FB induces the most strikes outside of the zone.

What will Freddy's record be this year? My guess would be maybe 10-13 victories. If he is super healthy 14-15 games.

Prediction: 12-9

Forget about record, as there's really no way to project that. The league average ERA and WHIP in 2009 was 4.34/1.39. If Freddy can stay at or slightly below those averages, I'll be elated.
