I picked one of these up to test our product on at work, so I got to play around with it a bit today.

What a completely pointless piece of technology.

Yep, the HP Slate will be a IPad killer and the Microsoft Courier will blow it out of the water whenever it arrives.

I happen to think it's very useful. I actually have it and have used it for more than a few hours.

Yup. Just like all those iPhone killing phones. And how the Zune killed the iPod.

I don't know why it is that Apple inspires such hate from certain people.

I don't know why it is that Apple inspires such hate from certain people.

It's not hate, it's just a realistic opinion.

I have a laptop. The iPad brings nothing new to the table, and it's inability to connect to a printer, to view java, the less-than-optimal WiFi performance, the smudgy screen, the glare on the screen... plus the fact that it weighs about the same as a netbook and like 2.5 lbs less than a laptop you can get for cheaper that has way more features and compatibility... how is this a device anyone really needs?

I guess if you don't have a laptop, and for whatever reason you'd want to spend more than a laptop to have apps that are just prettied up versions of things you can get on the web, but that you have to pay for in some instances, well... I'm rambling but this is a product that brings nothing new to the table and is more of a gimmick and a "oh look what I got" device than anything else.

Just looking at the features, the Slate and Courier WOULD blow the IPad out of the water.

I'm hardly against Apple, the Art Directors I know are in love with their Mac's, but most of the programmers like myself still prefer a PC.

I do find it funny that a certain faction of people now assume that Apple is the standard for innovation for the foreseeable future. It wasn't long ago that Microsoft rocked Apples world in the personal computer market and forced Apple to go back to the drawing board. Both Apple and Microsoft have had their periods of resting on their laurels and were passed in the public's eye by each other.

Apple is still the standard for visually appealing devices, but I'll take my Motorola Droids functionality over the IPhone any day. But I can understand why my brother and sister love their IPhones, it's a revolutionary, beautiful system. The sheer amount of apps on the IPhone won't be touched for a while(if ever).

However, the IPad, similar to the IPhone, has some functionality set-backs that seem to be addressed in the HP Slate, while the Courier seems to offer even more innovation than the IPad.

It's going to be really, really hard for Microsoft or HP to address the "hip", college crowd, notion of an Apple device being the "cool" choice.

I don't have a laptop. I avoid windows machines. I often work night shifts and weekend shifts where I am required to sit in front of a computer for 12 hours at a time. A Mac laptop runs about $1,000, and I wouldn't use it for any serious productivity tasks. I wanted something for internet surfing, to read books with, to watch movies on, to check my email, etc. It serves my needs absolutely perfectly.

Really? With the glare on the screen? Your eyes will not thank you.

Any light in the room or heaven forbid if you read outdoors and you don't stand a chance.

I've read with it for several hours already without being bothered by the glare. I was upset to read, however, that it is difficult to see in the sunlight.

I'm not meaning to hate here. I've used a G5 in the past for my profession and it was a phenomenal machine. The hate in this thread really seems to be toward Windows PCs, that some users just can't even bother with despite the great pricepoint and incredible performance. Thus, they are forced to purchase a lesser product at a higher price, or go balls out and spend $1500 on a Mac laptop.

Anyway, that's just my review. The iPad is pointless. If it were half the price, it might be worth it, but still the highest storage is what? 64 gigs? My PC laptop eats that for breakfast!

At least in my opinion...this had very little to do with quality, but had much more to do with Microsoft's exclusivity agreements with companies that paid for their marketing, and their monopolistic actions on a number of levels to make sure they didn't lose control of the market.

It's really not meant to compete dollar for dollar with your Crap (I mean PC) laptop.

I'm buying in to the marketing, but as an IPhone owner, I dunno what this thing brings to the table other than a larger screen. I'm not going to buy movies for it, I'm not going to play games on it. I don't need to have an 8 inch screen to read my email. I have a computer to browse the web. And unless I want to give more of my money to AT&T, this thing is an at work/at home device for any internet usage.

I dunno, I think I'm going to pass. The HP machine looks pretty nice, and FINALLY includes flash support.

My PC, running Windows 7, has never had an issue and performs at an extremely high level while running all of my graphic and web design programs at once. Keep rolling with your uneducated opinion, though.

I've had both machines, Steve. The amount of crap I had to put up with on a windows machine is exponentially higher than what I deal with on an Apple machine. It's not uneducated, it's experience. What about your PCs running Vista? How did that work out? What a piece of junk that OS was. Now I am supposed to go buy another windows machine just because Microsoft has basically tried to reverse engineer Snow Leopard?

Windows machines have proven over the last half-decade to be inferior machines. I should run out and buy one just because they have managed to create an OS that has lasted more than 3 months without any common fatal flaws?

There's no doubt that Microsoft pilfered most of their ideas and products from others. But MS-DOS and Windows changed the computing landscape. Then Microsoft went into cruise control and starting putting out disasters like Microsoft ME.

Windows only changed the computing landscape by making MS-Dos operating systems work like the OS that was already working on Apple computers

MS-Dos I will grant you as ridiculously innovative. But now we've gone back to what, the 1970's, for the time when Microsoft genuinely was ahead of Apple in performance and technology?

I upgraded my last remaining PC with the OS that will not be named last weekend after my free upgrade finally arrived after 4 months of trying to get them to ship it to the right address. God, it was a pleasure to kill that thing off.

Windows 7 rocks.

As for a previous post, I don't see why dropping $650 on an iPad that is guaranteed to not have features that you fear might be corrupted by a faulty OS that is no longer sold is such a great idea.

Anyhoo. Clearly there's a hater in the thread, and that isn't me.

So because the OS is no longer sold means it isn't still running on millions of machines?

Sorry, but Microsoft has not earned my trust yet. I will not buy a windows machine simply because this latest OS hasn't made everyone's computing experience a complete disaster yet.

And to be honest with you, the money really isn't that huge of a deal to me. The device does exactly what I need and want it to do, is of a more aesthetically pleasing and intuitive design for me to use.

I know in advance it will be well-made, it will continue to be improved, it will not be obsolete in a year because it has a company standing behind it that will support it.

Therefore, to me, the pricetag is acceptable.

HATER!

I am glad you like your iPad, though. That's really all that matters.

Does it upset you that I refuse to take your bait, Steve?

Get over it...I am happy with the device. Just like millions and millions of people are happy with Apple devices.

Why is that so difficult for you to accept?
