How can I get a hold of ios7 before the official release?

You have to have an Apple developer account, and have your phones IMEI number on an "allowed" list. So even if you have the software you need to be on that allow list or it won't activate.

So after spending last night playing around with iOS7, it's a lot more consistent in how things look/feel/work. Where iOS6 became more of a collection of added icons/ideas over time, iOS7 takes all of those ideas (and a few new ones from WM8, Android and WebOS), and updates the way they look and their implementations so they feel much more consistent across the board.

I have to find out more about the new APIs they opened, as based on the fact they've now opened a game controller API, which would allow addon hardware to turn the device into a full on gamepad, it seems as if Apple is loosening it's rules a bit when it comes to what can interact with iOS, which is a good thing.

A few other thoughts on the state of the tech industry:

As a long time XBOX user, having been a beta tester of the original XBOX Live, and a 360 owner, I have to say I'm disappointed in the X-Box One, or the XBone, for short. It's too expensive (500$ retail), the game fiasco where you don't own games is annoying, etc. So it's looking like Sony has won me as a customer for the PS4. Sorry, Microsoft...but we must part ways in the console business after more than a decade together.

There's nothing wrong with taking from a competing product that's better.

Design-wise I like what iOS 7 has to offer. They finally got rid of the awful leather and gloss that was the look of something made in 2007 (you know, back when Vista was considered a pretty UI). Flat design is all the jazz these days.

What's disappointing is that iOS still doesn't offer any real user customization like Android without having to jailbreak. They finally did get a better notification center and system toggles (FINALLY). But you could have gotten those things with jailbreak tweaks before.

I'm an Android guy, but they didn't invent the universal icon for wifi and battery life. Digital clocks have been around a really long time, too. I'm pretty sure they precede smartphones, even.

My wife has an iPhone 5. Is iOS7 going to be an OTA update? I'd like to know to tell her to hold off until it's smoothed out.

Plenty of discussion on the next gen over in the video games thread...

It will be OTA, but it's not due for release for months.

Some are, but beta testing. ;)

The icons look a LOT better when a darker background is used, versus the lighter blue one Apple used in their demos. At least, IMO.

...in what way exactly, and in comparison to what?

Looks fine to me. Easy to read.

Google confirms (well, earlier today), that they've purchased Waze, the social mapping app. I really hope this doesn't clutter up Google Maps with a bunch of social media s***.

Of the Mapping apps, since Google re-released an up to date app on iOS, it's been untouchable. It's clean, it works, it has navigation features (unlike the version that existed prior to Apple Maps), and I really hope they don't clutter it up with all this Waze bulls***.

For those of you who don't know what Waze is, it's essentially a social media based mapping application, which while it has some cool social featuers, such as designating a "speed trap" with a police icon, it tends to be a clusterf*** of shared information. It also encourages active engagement of your maps app while driving, which is another thing I don't like about it. I hope Google bought them just to kill them...I hope they don't integrate 90% of this s***.

It seems like many folks suspect they bought it to keep it away from Apple and aren't eager to integrate too much from it.

It would be nice if Google just took their user input data for traffic conditions. Like a real time, user input for traffic. It would be a feature you can turn off an on, etc.

There are a few things they can take from Waze, but I beg them not to over-clutter the app, and the primary issue I have with Waze is it basically encourages/requires real-time interaction with your device while driving. This bothers me. It's the last thing we need.

I definitely get your concerns, but it would be awesome if they would integrate real time traffic as the stuff I've typically seen is mediocre at best (latency in traffic changes is key).

Its ridiculous. That and the ABC News lady in the morning doesn't shut up about the Waze traffic reports. STFU and stop texting people. Why can't they have an app or mode on your phone where you can hit car mode and it will only allow incoming and outgoing phone calls through your blue-tooth and will read texts through bluetooth. Nothing else is even possible.

I'd definitely use it (maybe it exists and I'm just too stupid to do it).

That wallpaper doesn't do the new UI any justice.

You can do this through NFC tags and profiles. I use it in my car.

They did more or less invent live wallpapers though. That iPhone wallpaper is a live wallpaper.

What are NFC tags and profiles? I assume you mean set up a seperate ringing profile? How do i do on my iphone? I'm like a senior citizen with my phone. I use watch espn, pandora, yelp, and a few other apps plus the browser. Thats about it.

iPhone doesn't have NFC. Sorry bro. ;)

And this is the moment where I feel like one of those people in the Samsung commercials telling iPhone users theirs doesn't do "it".

You can program NFC tags to do specific functions on the phone, like switch on bluetooth, switch on GPS (or toggle if you want), open an app, etc. once you tap the NFC tag to your phone. You can place the tag on your car (most of them have adhesive) or you can get one on your key chain (what I have). There's applications that aid you in "programming" the tags. It's pretty easy.

No they didn't, live wallpapers have existed for eons.
