Yeah, and maps have existed pretty much since the dawn of civilization, so the fact that we have them in our phones is no major feat at all I guess.

 

How do you not understand that having something exist, and having something exist inside of a cell phone are different things? I think it's stupid that this somehow is bothering a few of you, as if I had been proclaiming I invented this myself.

Apparently, your school is state of the art, but the students that attend it are anything but since IR amazes them.

 

They're 'normal' people, they don't care or know about technology. Especially not technology in a phone, that's just way too abnormal for them.

And one of the major tools used in modern journalism is computers/phones, so being informed on the tools you use will probably be beneficial. What you are saying is it's ok for them to be ignorant about the things they will HAVE to use in order to do what they're studying to do...and um, well, it's not ok.

Well, he's right, most adults don't. All they care is whatever phone they have does the very few things they use it to do, which is almost primarily text. So long as it does that, they don't care.

 

Most of the people I know with iPhones or Androids (top end models), do nothing but text or make calls...all the rest of what the device is capable of they don't know, and don't care about.

All of Apples ecosystem works via wifi, so there is no need for IR anymore, though some of their devices still have some remnants of it leftover. That said, Apple has a track record of getting rid of older tech faster than anyone else.

 

They were one of the first to lose the floppy, and now they're one of the first to discard optical, too. I see IR in that same arena...a useful technology that's been superseded by an even better one. Yes, there will be hangers on to older technology, but for the most part, everyones catching on.

Outside of AP photogs, I dont think you'll see many newspaper guys carrying big expensive SLR's these days.

The first time I saw anyone mess with a bar's tv was with a wristwatch universal remote circa 1990. I figured that ran it's course during the last century. But everything old is new again.

On a serious note (I hope you've noticed that I haven't been serious for the past 20 min), almost every TV still uses IR. Nobody uses a floppy anymore.

 

Can manufacturers make a TV that uses bluetooth instead? Yeah, but it wouldn't make a lot of sense for them considering IR does the job just fine.
