He's basically at the age where you wonder if it's a MUST that he play every day. Granted he hasn't had a full year at AAA... but then if you give him that, he's going to (possibly) be a rookie here next year catching a veteran staff every day.

 

I know we have Castro, but I'm wondering which of these two choices people prioritize right now.

 

 

 

If you view him solely as a trading chip, then I guess it's pretty easy to choose from these two.

I think you have him catch in AAA all years and next year you bring him here and offer AJ a two-year deal.

 

They split catching duties in half, and while one is not catching he is DH'ing, similar to the DH by committee that we have going on this year.

Catch all year at AAA, come up in Sept. to get some familiarity with the staff. That is something that will build with time but right now his bat is his value and he needs to work on it more, cutting down K's and getting used to more advanced pitching.

If Flowers' bat isn't there, then he has no value as he is no defensive wiz. His bat has not proven itself a known commodity, so I'd rather he polish that up in AAA and then learn the staff. One is more critical than the other at this junction.

He shouldn't even play next year. We should make him a bench coach!

I'm a big proponent of top prospects (I.E. guys you view as future everyday players) getting consistent playing time. It's one thing if a guy like C.J Retheford makes the team and only sees the field once a week. But your top guys like Hudson and Flowers need to get it started right away. Otherwise leave them in the minors, as there's not much to gain by them riding the bench.

Late '10 or the '11 Season, I can see a DH/C platoon between Flowers and AJ with Retherford as MI bench and emergency catcher.

At this point he needs to be in AAA being the fulltime starter and maybe working with a peer like Lucy he can even improve his defense some. He def. should be looked upon as a sept. callup and assuming has a successful season penciled in as the starter next season. Pierynzski is getting old and Id love to have him back next season if he is willing to take that reduced role.

Flowers has the tools to be a good hitter, his patience is probably his greatest asset and that's usually the asset that gives young hitters success early on.
