Does anyone remember an incident before the coach was attacker that the fielders especially the outfielders would chase down fans themselves that managed to get on the field. One outfielder said something like they would wail on the intruders.

The only way that it could be construed as torture is if multiple rent-a-cops had lit him up all at one time; or, if they tased him while he was on the ground or in custody.

I think its hilarious when fans run on the field.. that video of the kid getting tasered was awesome, he went down like a ton of bricks..

No, not at all. The point isn't pain, and really it isn't that painful. The point is causing the subject to be unable to resist because their muscles are temporarily freaked out.

And after a few dozen uses, you wind up hitting the guy who doesn't know he has an enlarged heart and you kill a fan on the field.

One of the students in my old high school died when he was tazered (was on the news actually). If that isn't extreme, then I don't know what is.

Nope. Not sure a taser was either, but taser is below blunt weapon force on the continuum for a reason. Tasers don't do permanent damage under 99.9% of circumstances, where as a baton will bruise or break things most of the time. You are kind of making my point for me that a taser isn't some awful torture technique when used to subdue someone.

To be fair, it depends on how many volts are being used and how long they keep it on you. Depending on both of those things it's very comparable to OC Spray. I think what needs to happen is good old fashioned policing. RUN and catch the criminal, if he's resisting then you use whatever force is necessary. The kid that got tagged in Philly was outrunning an out of shape police, making him look like a clown. I think it was done more for the cops ego than actually having to use that kind of force. How do you prevent this in the future? Fire the police that are too out of shape to do their jobs.

In that case, the use of force is fully appropriate.

 

A good rule of thumb...think of the taser as a "Less lethal" weapon. If the offender is in a position where you'd consider shooting them even if you thought you didn't need to kill them, its use is appropriate.

 

You wouldn't shoot a person for running out onto the field. You'd consider it if they made a dart at a player or they physically went after someone else on the field.
