June 23, 201015 yr Author QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 12:35 PM) 8 years ago they faced Germany in the quarterfinals, lost in a heartbreaker where we outplayed the Germans but the German goal keeper was a tank. Prior to this team, I believe that team was the best team in US history (from a pure talent standpoint). There was a also a german handball on the goal line (Torsten Frings?) that kept a US tying goal out that wasn't called. But if Oliver Kahn isnt the goalie the US would have advanced to the semi-finals for sure.
June 23, 201015 yr QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 09:19 AM) There really are maybe 10 teams or less that are in a different class than the US. It appears that the US will not have to face any of them. Even Germany is a team that the US matches up with considerably better than a Spain, Brazil, Argentina or other teams who play a quicker Spanish style pace. US tends to give up a lot of fouls and set pieces against teams like that. Unbelievable turn of events. Of all the teams out there, these are the ones I really really don't want to play and that we will have a hell of a time beating: Spain, Argentina, Portugal, Brazil. There are another set of teams that I personally wouldn't like matching up against and that would include Ghana, but outside of that I think the US can play with every other team in the world and we have beaten Spain relatively recently. The key will be our defense playing strong and our offense finshing because we can't continue to not finish. I have a lot of faith in this squad though, but I'll take it one game at a time. Lets kick some ass on Saturday!! USA USA USA!!!!
June 23, 201015 yr watching sports at work is not a good idea. When Dempsey hit the post I took my stapler and threw it against a chair. then I played the drums on my desk when donovan won the game in injury time. . . . fun morning.
June 23, 201015 yr QUOTE (The Bones @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 11:48 AM) Wow! That was amazing! Where can I get my Landon Donovan home jersey? I'd say soccer.com, but they're sold out of usa jerseys til August
June 23, 201015 yr QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 10:39 AM) . The key will be our defense playing strong and our offense finshing because we can't continue to not finish. I have a lot of faith in this squad though, but I'll take it one game at a time. I feel like that's the main key for this squad in every game. I have faith in the offense to score some goals(obviously we need to finish much better than we did today) but the defense still scares the s*** out of me at times. BTW, I really can't see the replay of that goal enough, f***in awesome!!!
June 23, 201015 yr Serbia v Australia in 15 minutes. I'm pumped the f*** up. I'd love to see a US/SRB matchup in the round of 16.
June 23, 201015 yr I just got from watching with a group of friends. I've lost my voice and I ended up on the bottom of a dog pile. Great times!
June 23, 201015 yr Wow... link Algeria player slaps female reporter PRETORIA, South Africa – Algeria soccer player Rafik Saifi slapped a female journalist across the face as the aftermath of the United States’ dramatic World Cup victory turned ugly at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Wednesday night. While walking through the interview zone, Saifi spotted writer Asma Halimi, who works for Algerian newspaper Competition, and struck her with his open hand in front of dozens of witnesses. Halimi responded by striking the player in the mouth. Saifi then threw a sports drink bottle at a wall in the interview area, as Halimi was ushered away by security staff. Saifi came on as substitute for the last five minutes of the USA’s 1-0 victory. “I said nothing to him and he reached over and hit me,” Halimi said to Yahoo! Sports. “So I hit him back. I said nothing to him first.” It is understood that Saifi and Halimi had previously had a difference of opinion over an article she wrote for her newspaper. “She was standing there and the guy came here and he hit her,” said Francisco Aguilar Chang, a reporter from Guatemala who witnessed the incident. “Then she hit him back and her nail caught his lip.” Saifi and Algerian football association officials refused to comment when quizzed by Yahoo! Sports. The Algerian team has come under heavy criticism in its homeland after a disappointing World Cup in which it finished at the bottom of Group C and was knocked out of the tournament. When asked if she would launch an official complaint with governing body FIFA and the Algerian F.A., Halimi replied: “Of course.”
June 23, 201015 yr QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 11:22 AM) Actually, i'd prefer Serbia win to top the group and Germany/Ghana draw so we'd face Ghana in the second round. I want nothing to do with the Serbs It's looking like this will happen. Serbia down 2-0 to the Aussies. Germany up by 1 on Ghana. Unless Germany scores two more goals, it's looking like we're playing Ghana. Edited June 23, 201015 yr by chw42

June 23, 201015 yr QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 03:03 PM) If Ghana ties it up we're playing Germany though FYI Yeah, which would suck. But I think Germany holds on.
June 23, 201015 yr QUOTE (chw42 @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 03:04 PM) Yeah, which would suck. But I think Germany holds on. I hope so. Serbia cuts it to 2-1, if they can make it 2-2 and Ghana loses 1-0, Slav would get his wish.
June 23, 201015 yr I don't think Ghana wants to tie/win and play England. Edited June 23, 201015 yr by chw42
June 23, 201015 yr QUOTE (chw42 @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 03:12 PM) I don't think Ghana wants to tie/win and play England. They better be careful, if the Serbs can sneak in an injury time goal, Ghana won't be playing anyone for a while.

June 23, 201015 yr Author It's official USA-Ghana England-Germany Honestly, best case scenario IMO. Ghana has players who can score but they havent all tournament. And Essien is out. They are susceptible on the back end so I could definitely see a somewhat open game with them
June 23, 201015 yr One of these four teams will make the semi-finals: South Korea, Uruguay, USA, or Ghana Compare that to the four on the other side now: Argentina, Mexico, Germany, or England. Edited June 23, 201015 yr by LittleHurt05
June 23, 201015 yr I really hate having to play Ghana. Maybe it is because I still have memories of thinking about how Ghana was a bunch of nobodies 4 years ago only to see us get our asses completely kicked.

Ghana is better than the US, luckily not Germany-better. It was the best case scenario.
