White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen took notice of the Wrigley Field fans booing Gordon Beckham for attempting a bunt with one out in the eighth inning of Ted Lilly’s no-hit bid Sunday.

With the Sox trailing 1-0, Beckham fouled a bunt, prompting most of the 40,456 fans to voice their displeasure.

“You bunt in the ninth, that’s unprofessional,” Guillen said. “But the eighth, Wrigley Field people; the only thing they can do is boo. They boo for every freakin’ thing here.”

 

My take: Oz stands up for his players. He is a great great man.

Agreed, but the love won't last long if some Cub in the middle of the lineup doesn't wear a fastball early on the next meeting.

I would only disagree with Ozzie on this point:

In the situation the Sox were in (down one run in the 9th inning), if Juan Pierre bunts it's not unprofessional since bunting is part of his game. If Paul Konerko bunts, it's unprofessional. If you're getting trounced, then maybe even Pierre bunting can be seen as a dick move.

Totally agree. You bunt in the 8th during a no-no in a 1-0 game its a totally acceptable, you bunt in the ninth, especially if its like 5-0 game, thats bush league. What Beckham did was absolutely fine. The booing is just another example of groups of morons with a voice.

The announcers even stated during the game when the Cubs fans were booing that it was totally fine for Beckham to be bunting considering that the game was still very winnable. Considering that they were down by just one run a, a base runner puts you right in position to steal a base and tie it with a single. Nothing wrong with what he did, i wouldn't even be mad if we did it in the ninth inning, is the team supposed to just give up and not try to win b/c Lilly has a no no going, i think not.

Exactly. It's a one-run game. You try to win that no matter what.

I still remember Ben Davis breaking up Curt Schilling's perfect game (although it might have been a no-hitter) with a bunt. I loved it.

I'm surprised that many people there were actually paying attention to the game. Probably one person who was paying attention started booing and then others joined in. Then they said, "What are we booing about? The seagulls?"

I loved Ozzie through 2009.

 

2010, I'm over it. He's led Vizquel off and today Andruw Jones in a horrible slump. He doesn't seem to make much sense.

Hate to say it, but that booing would take place if the roles were reversed and we were down at the Cell. Fans as a whole are not as knowledgeable as the members of this site or the announcers, which is why they will continue to explain the legitimacy of bunting in that situation. It would probably take place at most stadiums other than Joe Robbie, I'm not sure people even know what baseball is in Miami.

On a related note, Wrigley is not as big a stinky urinal as some on this board make it. I think they do the best they can with what they have and I forgot how much I missed the ease of pissing in a trough like at old comiskey

 

However, nearly 15 years since my last visit and a lot of mellowing on the whole Cubs-Sox thing, I must say it is one big uncomfortable fire trap. The rows are on top of each other and I can not understand why so many of the fans there constantly get up and down during the game. What's worse is they do it in the middle of the inning. There is very little incline to the sections so even when someone several rows down from you gets up, there is a decent chance your view of the game will be blocked for a bit.

 

Like old Comiskey, the posts and overhangs can obstruct your view from the 200 section quite a bit as well, but it is understandable. Also, getting in and out of there is a real test to ones patience. I would say it is just because it was Cubs-Sox, but based on their attendance figures, I assume it is a pretty standard experience. Lots of nice looking tail, though.

I've been to Wrigley maybe 4 times (and once was for the Winter Classic), and you're right about it not being as bad as it's made out to be. It is old and a bit dingy, but it's not a terrible venue. There definitely doesn't seem to be the same attention to the game there as other stadiums.

I don't care Beckham tried to bunt. What I do care about is that he has so little confidence in himself to get a base hit without having to bunt. Hit a f***ing line drive Gordon!

I wonder why the new stadium doesn't have troughs? Gets the guys in and out pretty fast. I guess it's considered gross to have so many people see your own piss. I liked your recap on Wrigley.
