MattZakrowski
Wishful thinking, I know, but Domonic Brown is major league ready, and Werth is a FA after this season. Werth would be a legitimate defensive upgrade over Quentin, would could DH, filling that void. I'm assuming that Werth would get type A comp. Is there any chance that we have the bullets to get him? MattZakrowski
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 18, 2010 -> 01:55 PM) Werth is going to get a huge contract this offseason. No thanks! I'd just want him as a rental.
Balta1701
Hmph, I've gotten the impression that he hasn't been that good in 2010 but his numbers don't agree with that at all.
TheChrisSamsa
The Phillies are shopping him. He's a good defender, but he wouldn't be much of an upgrade offensively, especially for a rental.
fathom
Wait, Werth wouldn't be an offensive upgrade from Jones and Kotsay? Why is it that the trade deadline always brings the most unrealistic views of Sox players? Edited July 18, 2010 by fathom
TheChrisSamsa
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 18, 2010 -> 12:56 PM) Hmph, I've gotten the impression that he hasn't been that good in 2010 but his numbers don't agree with that at all. He's been very inconsistent, kind of like the Phillies as a whole.
Kalapse
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 18, 2010 -> 01:01 PM) Wait, Werth wouldn't be an offensive upgrade from Jones and Kotsay? Why is it that the trade deadline always brings the most realistic views of Sox players? Just ignore the ~.380 wOBA he's put up every year since 2007, he's struggled in the month of July therefore he is bad.

TheChrisSamsa
Anyone know what the Phillies have been asking for him? Edit: They're looking for starting pitching, someone to help their rotation this year. Edited July 18, 2010 by PlunketChris
Balta1701
QUOTE (PlunketChris @ Jul 18, 2010 -> 02:13 PM) Anyone know what the Phillies have been asking for him? The talk out there has been that the Phils would obviously rather move Ibanez than Werth (you know...that's not the worst idea I've ever heard either). Anyway, Major League starting pitching under the Phils control after 2010 and Right handed power to replace Werth. I don't know if Hudson + Flowers would do it in their mind...but those guys actually fill those 2 roles. Of course, Carlos Ruiz just signed a 3 year deal as their catcher. TheChrisSamsa
I haven't heard or seen anything on this, but The Phillies might be one of few teams looking to solidify their closer role or atleast secure a back up plan. Lidge can't be depended on and when it wasn't Lidge, they were parading Jose Contreras out there. Putz or Jenks might be an appealing piece to them if they're made available. pktmotion
Werth would be a great addition to the squad. 1.) He'd give us better defense in RF and move Quentin to DH. 2.) He would take care of the LH Power Role, since he's hitting righties (.901 OPS) better than lefties (.836) 3.) He'd command much less than Dunn via trade. I read a report somewhere that stated the Phillies were wanting to dump Werth somewhere so they could use the savings/prospects to attain Oswalt. So I don't think they necessarily demand Hudson. I think a package of Santos, Marquez, and Gilmore would be fair for both teams. I say yes to Werth.

He's made some questionable signings (Ibanez, Polanco, and the Howard extension), but I don't know that he's ever made a questionable trade similar to that. I don't think I would have traded Lee away, but he was smart and kept Dominic Brown and he sorta reloaded his minor league system with the Lee trade. I don't think I would have traded Lee away, but he was smart and kept Dominic Brown and he sorta reloaded his minor league system with the Lee trade. I was under the impression that basically all the guys they'd gotten back from Seattle were underperforming, and that Seattle got a much better (Smoak) package back for Lee than they gave up for him. Do you dispute that?
