Uni Watch article on the creation of the 1982-1986 uniforms

Featured Replies

nice article but I still don't like that uniform. I think it's more of the pedestrian like logo that really gets me, and the heavy color blocking but I will admit it is a unique set, and better than what they had just prior to that. I love the current set and the older uniforms from the 00's-50's as well.

Wow. I remember participating in the fan vote. I don't remember the one I voted for but I do remember it wasn't the uniform that ended up winning.

I hated all six of those designs. I didn't even bother to vote for any of them - I actually preferred the collared shirts to any of those Astros-obsessed monstrosities. I was thrilled when they dropped that uniform, even if the new ones had the Campbell's Soup "C" on the cap.

It's funny that the '87-'90 unis are the "pariah" of Sox unis, though.

They're just bland, not classic or zany like their predecessors or the present uni.

Wow. Thats a cool story. I actually have one of those uniforms and i occassionally where it to the ballpark. My favorite are the ones of today. Did you all know that we've had these same uniforms for the past 22 years? Crazy to think about. But i think its important to keep a look going. I love the fact that they brought back the basic logo from 1949-1975.

Haha. I pretty much hated all six designs too but I very much welcomed a new uniform. I loved the old style lettering on the late '70's uniforms but disliked the collared shirts, though they were unique. I've always liked uniform change. As much as I like the current uniforms I'd like a change, just for the sake of change. I'm just weird that way, probably not a popular opinion.

Good story. I never knew it was a fan voting. Of the 6, I agree with him that his and the one w/ the diagonal stripe were the only good looking ones.

I kinda liked the one on the far right of the left photo.

You younger guys gotta remember that this was the end of the polyester period where everyone wore it as a uniform. Even the Yankees and Dodgers.

It was the age of astroturf, new space age technology in ballparks and trucker caps.

Old unis and Comiskey pretty much were against the style of the time.

I agree, I'd like a new uniform design, too. What I'd like is either a road uni or an alternate uni featuring the diamond sock on the chest and/or cap.

I thought I was the only one who felt that way. I hated that uni, and I still do to this day.

Maybe this is weird, but even though I'm glad they're not our uniforms now, I'm glad we had them.

I called them the "toothpaste tube" uniforms. They do hold some nostalgia for me, though, because of the '83 Winning Ugly team. I know Rader meant "ugly" for the way the Sox won games, but for me the ugly was in the clothes.

Makes perfect sense and I agree.

It really makes me appreciate our 3-headed jersey monster we have right now. I love our jerseys.
