QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Nov 26, 2012 -> 05:47 PM)

Bernstein said Illinois is actively working "back channels" to get a specific coach to replace Beckman that people will like. If they get him, Beckman will be fired. If they cant get him, Beckman will stay for at least another year.

If they bring someone in, they will, and if they don't, they won't.

Way to go out on a limb there Bernstein

No matter what, he wins.

Jim Tressel, come on down. :P

Tulane and East Carolina to the Big East, BYU says no again.

Chatter about Navy, Louisville and UConn to the ACC.

This stuff is way more interesting when you're not worried about your own school.

In all seriousness, that would be about the best possible move for both parties. Illinois isn't going to find a football coach of that level who wants to come to their campus. Their best other hope is to pray they can fish the next second tier coach out of obscurity who can replicate his success at Illinois. Tressel would be a godsend for the Illini.

Didn't he wind up with the "Show cause" penalty on his name

Yes he did, and it's effective until December 2016.

He has a 5 game suspension if he's hired. Oh yeah and the "bowl game" if they make it.

For a school like Illinois, that is totally worth it. Otherwise it is try to pick another mid-major guy and hope you don't end up with the next Beckham.

Thats all the school gets penalty-wise. Progress reports every 6 months and 5 game suspension of the head coach. He can still recruit, assemble a staff and do pretty much what every head coach does. Its not like Pearl where he was done recruiting for 3 years.

I'd risk it. They'll be in major bowl games within the next 5 years if he's hired.

That's a steal when you consider that any coach is going to be a waste the first year or two anyway as they clean up Beckham and Zook's messes.

It's a no-brainer, offer him up a blank check Mike Thomas! The question is, what are the odds Tressel accepts?

I thought the hiring school still had to somehow "show cause" in order to justify the hiring, which is how that coach-specific penalty got its name? I would also think that having successively hired and suffered through Zook and Beckman, Illinois could probably satisfy any applicable threshold.

Kentucky has hired Florida State Defensive Coordinator Mark Stoops.

Not great, but he's apparently listening to other offers right now so maybe.

That's why I don't think the odds are great. There are many better programs out there than Illinois.

Yeah, but alot harder conferences to win in than the Big Ten.

Apparently Arkansas has offered Les Miles.

Miles leaving LSU for Arkansas would shock me!

Miles will be loving the raise LSU will have to give him now.

ACC supposedly voting tomorrow on Louisville.

Supposedly Cincinnati is trying to squeeze in front of Louisville, sending fact sheets and stuff to the league office.

College sports are a mess right now, yet still fun as hell to watch.
