Reports: Illini hire John Groce

Featured Replies

I agree that it should not be at all about the money, which is why if Im Illinois Im aiming higher than Smart. The only reason Illinois would have any issues is that their football team may not be as profitable as other Big 10 schools and therefore they need to use more of the basketball revenues to pay off the other sports expenses.

The reason I say this is because of a 2011 article about Big 10 v SEC in terms of profitability.

Based on their numbers Illinois Athletic Department made $1.3 mil, which is 3rd lowest. If Illinois wants to use athletic budget to pay for the new coach, they likely have about 1-2 mil to add to Weber's salary

On the current landscape, who exactly his higher than Smart?

Buzz Williams is way better than Smart. Im not a huge Smart fan though, havoc is great against mid-majors and for 1 and done tournament situations, dont think its going to win out over a Big 10 conference season though.

I'd prefer Stevens over Smart.

He's never leaving Butler.

Rumor (started on an Indiana message board no less) that Shaka said thanks but no thanks.

Has there been any word that he has changed his stance on leaving Butler? I sure haven't heard that.

I think he would only leave for the Indiana job.

Shaka is addressing his players right now. I guess we will find out shortly, but sounds like the answer is no.

Herb Gould ‏ @HerbGould

#Shaka says no. Turned down at least $2.5mil from #illini today, multiple sources tell Sun-Times.

So who's next?

He's never leaving Butler.

Butler moving to the A-10 certainly makes it more likely that he will stay.

So who's next?

1. Buzz Williams

2. Gregg Marshall

3. Reggie Theus

Anyone else?

I saw one mention of Martin from K-State. Any chance that is true?

As an ND alum, I wholly recommend Illinois hire Mike Brey.

I saw that too, I'd be intrigued he can definitely take a mediocre program and put it in the top 25, but his intensity kind of scares me. It's worked thus far there, but is he so over the top that he loses his players would be my concern.

That would definitely be intriguing, he's a got a pretty good track record at ND.

Fixed your post.

Did that happen already or is it in the works? All this extra realignment has me lost.

Id take Chris Collins over Frank Martin.

Anthony Grant from Alabama is the other major name out there.

Not officially announced yet but supposedly a done deal beginning July 2013.
