It seems that when we reached .500 the Sox had brrathed the rarified air of success... and passed out.

I agree. Who can you really say isn't trying? Maybe they are trying to hard? Anyway the team isn't getting the job done. And I wouldn't read anything in to a player not being in the lineup today. Like Rios for example. The guy needed a day off after 60 in a row
