They should never have flip-flopped or talked about Contingency Plans...set your matchups and stick with them except in the case of injury.

Who cares about yesterday. Every game is another stat, and extremely crutial at this point.

I agree that every game is a stat but I stand with Molto when he said decisions JM made for starting pitcher in this case gave us the best chance to come out with at least one win out of these two games. Switch the starters around and we could have easily come away with the loss in both.

BJ.. I agree Cotts should have started. However I think he should have come out after walking 2 or 3 in a row (no tv so I don't know exactly how it went down). No sense in keeping him in there as he'd be likely to start trying to toss faster and might end up hurting himself. Give him the lesson.. he's got to get it. But to leave him in there.. geez. Danny should have been warming up as the game started.

Did the sox ruin Cotts confidence?  Me and others were afraid this guy wasnt ready.  Now what?  The next Rauch.  While i wasnt against the decision of him starting today, it backfired and JM has to be responsible.  KW has to be responsible for bringing him up too soon.  Im f***ing pissed.

Cotts seems like a very confident kid. I think the Sox are high on him and he knows it. I didn't catch the early parts of the game (was at school) but from what I've seen in his few major league starts he doesn't show fear, when it comes to walking guys, etc.

 

He can make big pitches and this only tells him he's still got some things to work on and I Think he knows and understands that, hence the fact that he's going to the AFL.

And again I go back to my statement that the loss in the first game at detroit would be more damaging.

Well if that happens, then this team has nothing and I'd rather find that out now than later. If we truly have no sack, the I'd rather us not even make the playoffs.

 

But, we shall see how we respond to this test. If we can take care of the Tigers, we've got a 9-game homestand (I think) starting next week, and as we all know, we're 20 games over .500 at home.

OK, if you think this team will lose confidence after getting beaten by a very good Yankees team(especially with a rookie starting), even if the Sox are mentally weak, and they for some odd reason did not lose confidence after being shut out by John Thomson of all people, then I don't know what team you are watching.

In some weird way, losing today might be a good thing overall for the Sox. Obviously it's not good for Cotts, nor is it good in the short-term since KC and MIN can gain ground on us. But, had we swept the Yankees, there's a better than decent chance that we could have gone into Detroit and overlooked them and looked forward to the upcoming 9-game homestand. That's happened a few times with this Sox team -- they become complacent. Now, having lost today, I think they were reminded that they're in a dog fight, and that every game counts the same at this time of the season. I hope so, at least, because these 3 games with Detroit are huge IMO.

But seriously, let's pretend that the Sox are as fragile as people believe. Would it be better that they lose the last game of the Yankee series and leave having won 2 of 3 and then win game 1 of the Tiger series...OR...go into Detroit, where the last time they played they got swept. Throw Cotts out there, who anyone with eyes can tell can't get anybody out ever, and lose the first game to the Tigers. Well, s***, now the Sox, being such weak sisters upstairs, are thrown into a funk because they've now lost at least 4 straight in Comerica, and mail in the rest of the series.

 

If the Sox are going to lose momentum and the season with their next loss, it really doesn't matter where it happens.

Apparently you havent been watching the sox this season. Its a serious concern. Its not a reason to panic, but the whole team is pissed at JM and that can easily cause this team to lose focus. And i will repeat the word EASILY......

personally, I would've started Buehrle because Buehrle wanted to start and he deserves that, but Manuel wanted to give Buehrle an extra day off, which is what he's been saying all along.

 

he wanted the Sox to win the series AND, if possible, give Buehrle the extra day off. he had the intention of going with Cotts from the get go, but held up his decision, waiting on Wednesday's final. I don't see what is the big deal with it.

I was neutral. I didnt say it ruined cotts, i asked if it could. The fact is JM gets paid for his decisions and this one backfired. He deserves the second guessing.

Yeah there will be. On the other hand, this sox team could really help by playing consistently for a few weeks, no? They make it easy to panic when they do things like get swept by the tigers ....

And people please note my question mark in my thread title. I didnt say he WAS ruined but a game like that could ruin a young players confidence. My point was, from the beginning, that cotts shouldnt be thrown into a pennant race. I dont like it............but i still feel the sox will win this division and go far into the playoffs IF they dont go mentally weak on us. Thats a real possibility, but i dont THINK it will happen.
