If this is true, its really bad news for the rebels. Killing civilians of another country is the easiest way to get the hammer brought down on you.

This will be a situation where both sides blame the other one.

I may be reading too much into it but they said they did not shoot at any "airborne targets". I wonder if that is diplomat-speak for we shot at a ground target and oh f***!

When I read the headline, I thought it was an update on the missing Malaysian flight.

This is terrifying. Ukraine is f***ed.

Entirely different sets of weaponry. Surface to surface weapons aren't accidentally hitting a jet at 30K ft.

Hearing now that there were 23 Americans on passenger registry.

23 Americans on board.

Apparently, Russia is the f***ed.

That depends on Europe. The US will only get as involved as our NATO allies sign off on. Maybe this pushes Europe past the point of caring about energy trade with Russia, but maybe not.

Meh. There will be a lot of noise, maybe some sanctions, nothing of importance will happen.

There was apparently a report earlier this week that rebels near Donetsk had captured a Ukranian air defense station armed with SAMs capable of hitting a high altitude plane. The rebel groups denied that they have such a capability, but worth noting.

Sky Sources: #MH17 flight was in a restricted area unsuitable for civilian aircraft

Plane went down in rebel controlled area. Rebels claim to have found black box but not allowing Ukrainian officials to have it or to enter the area.

Good start to a cover up by the rebels.

I've read the exact opposite. Though it is restricted now after the crash, of course.

Some airlines (all of the US ones plus some others) had already been avoiding the area, but not all.

They showed on CNN that the plane was off track but only because of a bad storm on their normal route to the South, so they traveled furthered North to avoid the storm.

So pro Russian rebels leader admits to shooting down a Ukrainian cargo plane via Twitter only couple of minutes before news start poppoing up about the 777 going down. Tweets were since deleted.

For shooting down a f***ing passenger jet?

For shooting down a f***ing passenger jet?

If it was shot down by official russian military they'll pay through the teeth and there will probably be some sanctions. If it was shot down by rebels within Ukraine, there isn't exactly an organized government to make restitution to. It could certainly weaken their support, but to what extent?

Check the history on that. Nothing really happens.

Latest chatter seems to indicate the missile came from Russian territory.

Latest chatter seems to indicate the missile came from Russian territory.

Allegedly it was a conversation between seperatist discussing today's shot down. It was all in Russian, russian subtitles.

Its probably this:

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/jul/...es-ukraine-live

A site attributed to a separatist leader suggests rebels may have shot down MH17, but it has since been taken down and details remain unclear.

It features a comment saying "We just downed an An-26 near Torez. It's down somewhere near Progress mine," which suggests rebel forces may have believed the passenger jet to be a Ukrainian military transport plane.

The page, on the VKontakte social network, is attributed to Igor Girkin, who goes by the nom de guerre Strelkov and is the self-proclaimed military commander of the rebels. The page has been posting for rebels affiliated with Strelkov for weeks, and has some 130,000 followers.

The post continues "We had warned them not to fly in 'our sky'" and says "here is video confirmation of the "downed little bird." The linked video is the same as that used in media reports on the crash.

The post also says "a residential sector was not caught" and "Innocent people were not harmed."

Rebels have previously shot down an An-26 jet on 14 June, killing 49 Ukrainian military servicemen.
