What about Evan Gattis?

Featured Replies

Gattis is more or less what we all hoped Flowers would be. A catcher who can post an .800 OPS and at least hold his own defensively. Would he be worth it to be a C/DH for us? From what I've read the Braves are pretty set on trading him and the price wouldn't be a ton.

I like the idea but what do the Sox offer for Gattis?

Hes really not a upgrade over flowers

I don't think he'd be that cheap. 20 homers, still pre arb (although getting in his late 20s - late bloomer I guess). Not sure he can catch 130 games.

I think the Sox would have to pay for this guy.

Anyway, I'd use the bullets for a LF who can hit and field if that exists and is available.

Not going to pretend like I have a clue what they are actually asking for, but a quick glance at their roster shows they aren't exactly set at 2B. I don't think La Stella is their future there. Wonder if Sanchez would get it done? Guess it would all depend on what kind of league interest there is in Gattis....don't know the answer to that either honestly.

We should go after jason heyward to improve our defense.

In what way is he not offensively? Defensively I can't really comment because I can't say I've seen Gattis catch many innings.

We're fine with Flowers at catcher next year and Atlanta will want too much for him. pass

if only he were a FA....we have the money.

Sox are in no position to rent, however.

I hear ya. I'm rather clueless myself. I'm thinking the Braves might be after pitching.

Seriously, what about him? The thread is about the possibility of upgrading at catcher and you are talking about a right fielder

Gattis is under team control for four more years and has a great bat. He may not be long for catcher, but the Braves still won't give him away cheaply, I think they are looking for a very good return.

Huge offensive addition, but there's lot of indications he's 1) not very good defensively and 2) most of his allure comes from his hitting, but when you move him to DH/LF then you lose a lot of his positive positive as we all know the average offensive numbers from the catching position have been on the decline for a decade.

If you could CONFIDENTLY play him at 3B, then I'd consider it, but that's probably the equivalent of Viciedo or Teahen over there, at best.

Then you're left deciding to pay a big-time free agent as your DH or give away a lot of talent to acquire an asset, which wouldn't make a lot of sense at this point in the rebuild...since we don't have a surplus of prospects unless you consider Sanchez to be one. Sanchez/Beck/Ravelo for Gattis would be laughed off the phone.

His .493 slugging% is only behind VMart, Cruz, and Ortiz among DHs last year, so while yes, his bat is more valuable as a DH it's not like he'd be a bad offensive DH.

Then you have the uncertainty of the NL transition to AL...McCann was a flop.

That doesn't mean Gattis will automatically end up like Dunn or McCann or any number of other examples, but there's been a pretty consistent trend of reduced performance when switching leagues (especially the first year, NL to AL).

Obviously, it didn't end up bothering Eaton too much, as a counterexample. Some players can adjust much more quickly.

The question is would Hahn be willing to give up Tim Anderson for Gattis? Or wouldn't it be a better use of resources to find a DH on the free agent market, someone between Adam Lind and Victor Martinez.

Wow, you really think Tim Anderson would be in the discussion for Gattis?? Maybe I'm way off but I just don't see it. I just don't think his value is that high. I could see Semien/Micah, Beck, and a guy like May or Rondon being enough. Evin Gattis just isn't the type of guy who gets traded for top 100 prospects.

No.

While Gattis wouldn't be cheap it won't cost him either. Gattis is a good hitter, but he's not that great.

He's just not what the Sox need anyway. Not good enough for DH; doesn't really man a position with defensive excellence either.

It would be sort of like the Swisher trade, which was awful

As soon as Anderson's name was mentioned, that would be the end of the phone call and I'm willing to bet the Braves know that. Gattis would not cost Anderson, tho I admit I'm not sure what the cost would be.

McCann was a flop, therefore Gattis will be also? Tim Anderson? You are all over the place

What is with you wanting to give up Anderson for mediocre MLB players? Today it's Gattis, a couple days ago it was Blackmon. Anderson is not a piece you move unless you are getting back a franchise changing player. Lock it up man.

Anyone know why he got only 400 PA's last year? Being platooned or injury or defense or something else?

He went on the DL in July with a bulging disk in his back and missed about 3 weeks.

He missed two weeks in September due to kidney stones.

With him not exactly being a spring chicken in terms of age, this worries me.
