If John Danks were a free agent, what would you expect him to sign for?

 

He hasn't thrown 200 innings since 2010. He hasn't had an era under 4.00 since 2010, even in the partial seasons. His velocity never has recovered. His 2014 was actually lower for average velocity than the year after his surgery.

 

I was on the Danks bandwagon for a while, but the guy has no value, at all. He had the nice flash at the end of the season after some mechanical changes, but I sure wouldn't be willing to pay anything of significance for that after his last four years.

I think this was due to the increased volume of innings and he wore down. I fully expect all of this to increase. However, as a GM I wouldn't offer much because there is no guarantee.

Not sure if you're being sarcastic or not but both players are relevant to the Sox, I would say.

Danks is going to have a good year this year. I would try trading him at the break.

I would have to look up some recent comparables for him but I'd assume he'd get between $5 and $10 million per year.

You think if we eat some salary we could get one of there surplus of OFers? A Snyder or Lambo possibly? I don't know just thinking of our needs if they do intend to get Danks.

Man, people are down on Danks. He's overpaid, I get it. But he's a serviceable number 4, and that is something the Sox need. The Sox are currently a starter short as it is. Unless trading him directly facilitates another move, like signing Scherzer (or trading for and extending Samardzija)or something big, I don't see the point of the Sox paying half of Danks' salary to pitch for someone else while still looking for starting pitching themselves. If you pay $7 mil to trade him and sign Masterson for about $9 mil, you are increasing your payroll by about $2 million in 2015 and not really improving the team all that much anyway. Is that really worth it?

 

Check out danks stats last year. In more than a handful of stats it was his worst year ever. He was lucky to have an ERA above 5. Dude is done

 

Lowest K/9. Highest BB/9. Highest WHIP for a full season. "Bag of baseballs" applies here I think.

 

Danks + $10M for Travis Snider? That's a 2 year $10M per year gamble on Danks for their 4th OF and we get a fairly young LH corner OF who was once a top prospect. IDK, makes some sense to me....

 

I would not be surprised to see the Pirates take both Danks and Viciedo. They can match DV with Alvarez as a platoon at 1B and use him as the DH in their interleague games.

He put up 0.3 fWAR in 2013 and 0.8 fWAR in 2014. If you just follow that last number exactly he was worth ~$4 million, and that seems fairly reasonable to me.

The 2011 extension wasn't a bad baseball move then. It just didn't work out.

It was a good signing. If he didn't have the injury, it would have been a bargain.

This may have been just smoke to get Liriano to re-sign and to quit holding out for more money.

Especially pitching at the Cell. He'd look a lot better in the NL West or Pittsburgh or Seattle. Which is why Pittsburgh could find him to be another nice fixer-upper if a lot of his contract was eaten.
