In my opinion, monitoring him as they go, 160 in the regular season, and 30 more in the postseason isn't abuse.

 

Alex Fernandez pitched 250 innings as a 20 year old in 1990. That's abuse.

 

IP alone isn't abuse. It all depends on how he worked up to the 250 IP in years past. You have to work up to a marathon, but it is routinely done. Starting pitching is no different. Guys could throw 300 IP if they were trained for it.

That may be, but there's no way Fernandez pitched anywhere near 250 innings in 1989 ( I looked it up, 148). I think it's safe to say, they went overboard with him immediately, and it probably cost him better years that followed, and possibly a longer career. Plus, you know, food.

 

I get they need to be smart with Rodon, but you also don't want to be too passive with him. But this is probably moot when the Sox fall out of it.

Rodon and Carroll should both be in the rotation.

No way in hell Carroll should be in the rotation. His value comes as a long reliever/spot starter. Rely on him for six or seven innings on a regular basis and he'll get beat up just as badly as Danks & Noesi.

At this point, it needs to be Danks, Samardzija, Sale, Quintana, Rodon, with maybe a spot start on May 22 and 28 for Noesi and Carroll.

That works for me. Wonder who they keep as the long reliever, as I don't see roles for both Noesi & Carroll once Rodon is in the rotation for good.

You can take that chance. I would not and I don't believe the Sox will. It just isn't worth risking his health and long term use to the club.

With Danks and Noesi pitching in the rotation, the Sox are not going to make the post-season. With Rodon in instead of one of them, at least you have a legitimate starter giving the team a chance to win.

 

The Sox cannot afford to "save" him until the end of the season because then the hole they have dug themselves will be even worse. Let him pitch until he hits whatever the inning limit is.

That's fine. The is one way to go. You can make the case either way. Just don't get upset when they shut him down during the pennant race.
