That's it. I haven't played so why formulate an opinion at all. Guess there's no reason for sports discussion boards then because most don't play or a lot haven't. Doesn't mean they're uneducated when it comes to point of views and opinions on sports.

I don't think it is wrong to point out the experience level difference. Just because you traded a stock or watched CNBC, it doesn't mean you know investing as well as Warren Buffet. Baseball isn't any different. And from a practical standpoint, the management staff is going to be privy to information that none of us have, and probably will never know. I mean even if we are just talking about understanding the personalities of his players, how would we know that stuff?

 

Like it or not, there is an advantage from having done something for decades on an intimate and personal level that people outside of the game will never have.

He's more like that Edward Jones or The Money Store advisor your family has used for decades, you go to BBQ's and share a couple of cold ones at Applebee's with him and his family and would feel terrible about "firing him" and going with a better broker because he's a good guy. Certainly, you don't want to hurt his feelings because you have the sense he's doing the best that he can, even though there are lots of better options to choose from. At least you're comfortable with him and know he's not out to cheat you or take advantage somehow.

What's funny is how you don't like my post as being "condescending" but yet the post I responded to was condescending people for having an opinion about managers... someone telling us we can't

have an opinion about something because we haven't done it before... is condescending. I think it would be quite common to feel that way.

Of course people with "inside information" have a scope others don't. But if every time people are going to disagree.. someone is going to play the "you haven't done it before card," then pretty much

that eliminates most opinions as invalid in most walks of life.

 

It's like... impossible to have direct experience of everything we have opinions on.

The idea that some magic happens when you step into the dugout as a 25 man roster player and this same magic then qualifies you to work "inside the lines" as they say after your career is bats*** insane. Quite frankly I think if you were to create a suitably qualified candidate from thin air one of the last things I'd look for is pro playing experience. In fact, the Sox seemed to singularly focus on RV as a "players' manager" because he played the game at a high level for a long time and would thus know how to create an environment where others could excel.

 

That logic is terribly, horribly, flawed. Sure, having played as a pro can be an asset for a manager. But it's hardly the most important qualification to hire on and IMO is probably one of the least important.

I played a lot of ball, little league, to American Legion, to showcases to eventually a really mediocre DIII career at my 1st choice academic school. I can certainly say that from my experience a good manager mattered. The players know when the manager isn't putting them in the best position to win. The players know when a manager is disorganized, or in contrast, organized. While I certainly never set foot in a pro clubhouse I did interact different levels of instructors and personnel on our college spring training trips. The level of organization between our s*** DIII outfit verse say a Florida juco draft factory was night and day. While such a difference is no doubt less pronounced at the MLB level I still believe that there is a difference between say John Maddon and RV. From practice drills on down to running team meetings.
