Reminds us, though, that stowing away the A+/AA Cuban catcher from the Nationals for an entire year had ZERO payoff at all. He's where he would be invaluable...or would have been, that experience.

 

Yah, you think it would have been worthwhile to hold onto Nieto a bit longer. I guess they preferred Smith - I guess that will happen when you watch a guy hit .200 at AAA. FWIW, Neito is hitting .165 in AAA right now.

There was no need to protect Carroll, except that the org. likes him. Sox have 5 Carrolls in Charlotte.

Turner has gotten shelled in Charlotte.

Yes, they could have stashed any number of catchers..but they still shouldn't have any problem finding some guy who can at least catch.

They should trade for Alex Rios to play catcher.

Considering Avila's injury history, they should have had one of those AAAA guys or grizzled veterans who have played for 1/2 the league stashed away in Charlotte. maybe they do.

They actually had that one guy, but released him to "clear room" on the 40. but the 40 contained such luminaries as Scott Carroll et al.

Last time I looked, AJ pretty much had the lowest WAR of any catcher or even ANY player in the majors this year with 150-175+ AB's.

Many do. But the #3 is usually not a highly valued property, unless you're fortunate enough to have a good AAA prospect, which most teams don't.

No. Many teams don't have a good #1 catcher, let alone 3. They may have 3 stiff bodies, which is exactly where the Sox are right now.

Hector Sanchez made it through waivers with SD. Adrien Nieto was kept on the Sox in a rebuilding 2014 to add depth to a rebuilding team. He hit .207 with a .660 OPS in AA last year, and in AAA this season is raking to a tune of .165/.263/.214. We really should be complaining they let him leave. They have a couple more catchers in the minors on the DL , including one that played for the 2014 KC Royals, so you know he must be worthy, but they are on the DL. Rottino or whatever his name is does have some major league experience, but they are down to their 6th or 7th catcher. No organization is going to have a good solution for that.

And yes I am counting Sanchez because they still wanted him around but unless the Sox planned on carrying 3 catchers, he needed to clear waivers, which he didn't. Seems you and greensox don't know much about the rules either.

It wasn't a spot on the 40. He is out of options, he needed to clear outright waivers to go back to Charlotte. He did not.

And I honestly believe they were saving Sanchez in the event of an extended injury to one of their catchers and purposely called up Smith instead due to the short-term nature. Hard to blame them for calling up Sanchez and losing him when the guy they were hoping to fill in temporarily got injured before his first game. The Sox did nothing wrong here and actually were proactive about having catching depth in AAA. Just some bad luck that has put them in a bind now.

Certainly. And being a catcher, you get more days off more often than other positions so it's really not that terrible.
