July 6, 20169 yr Another injury the Sox can't take because of the lack of talent in the minor league system and on the bench. We're not talking about All-Star selections here getting hurt (Avila, Jackson, Davidson, Putnum, Petricka, Webb) and the Sox are having a hard time replacing them. Mark
July 6, 20169 yr QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Jul 6, 2016 -> 03:27 AM) Who is next man up even? The guy they just acquired from the Astros? Kevin Smith?
July 6, 20169 yr KevAn Smith...isn't he still out? Yep, 7 DAY DL. The defense-first catcher we just acquired from the Astros, but that might not help so much with our offense still 10th-11th in the AL in most categories, despite scoring runs at a higher clip more recently. http://www.scout.com/mlb/rumors/story/1683...or-league-depth It's not going to be Gonzalez, his hitting stats are atrocious even for AA. Omar Narvaez? http://www.milb.com/roster/index.jsp?sid=t494 Can't imagine it would be Rottino or O'Connell. Hector Sanchez is gone, right? Dowdy and Gonzalez in AA. Not realistic options. Once again, White Sox minor league depth issues getting exposed. Edited July 6, 20169 yr by caulfield12
July 6, 20169 yr If he goes on the DL today, he comes back after the Mariners series. My guess is Narvaez comes up and fills the backup role and gets starts 7/17 and 7/20. Edited July 6, 20169 yr by Dunt
July 6, 20169 yr QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Jul 5, 2016 -> 09:27 PM) Who is next man up even? The guy they just acquired from the Astros? Saladino is the third catcher; I wonder if he can really catch or if that's just pure emergency.
July 6, 20169 yr QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 6, 2016 -> 08:39 AM) Saladino is the third catcher; I wonder if he can really catch or if that's just pure emergency. Said he caught most of his childhood. I doubt he'd be good but could do it well enough.
July 6, 20169 yr Avila's bat has been basically exactly what we could expect, but so has his ability to stay on the field.

Mark How many teams have 3 or more catchers in their organization?
July 6, 20169 yr Considering Avila's injury history, they should have had one of those AAAA guys or grizzled veterans who have played for 1/2 the league stashed away in Charlotte. maybe they do. They actually had that one guy, but released him to "clear room" on the 40. but the 40 contained such luminaries as Scott Carroll et al.

Also their third catcher got injured the day of his debut.
July 6, 20169 yr QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 6, 2016 -> 08:43 AM) How many teams have 3 or more catchers in their organization? Not specifically referring to the catching position as well you know given the players that I listed. Still numerous holes in this lineup at multiple spots and the minor leagues continue to provide little to no help. Mark

July 6, 20169 yr Many do. But the #3 is usually not a highly valued property, unless you're fortunate enough to have a good AAA prospect, which most teams don't. I don't hate people because they don't need a spot on the 40. It's supposed to be a professional baseball organization, not a holiday camp for friends. Edited July 6, 20169 yr by GreenSox

July 6, 20169 yr It is a bit weird that they'd protect Carroll over Hector Sanchez. Why would any other MLB team want Carroll desperately? Despite all the MLB pitchers we've gone through, we still haven't used Carroll or Turner. So now we're going to have to sacrifice Narvaez to the wolves. Not that he was a top prospect or anything. Reminds us, though, that stowing away the A+/AA Cuban catcher from the Nationals for an entire year had ZERO payoff at all. He's where he would be invaluable...or would have been, that experience. Adrian Nieto has been s*** in Marlins organization.
July 6, 20169 yr Yeah, Nieto was his name. Just unusual to protect a player for a WHOLE year on your roster and then completely give up on him so quickly. Usually, most teams cut bait during the first 2-3 months in that case.
