  1. Lost is beginning to resemble so many of Stephen King's books. Great characters, great premise, and then somewhere along the way the story kind of fizzles and comes to an unfulfilling ending. I hope that doesn't happen here.
  2. QUOTE(Beltin @ Feb 28, 2007 -> 09:58 PM) What is an even bigger joke is all the players in the major leagues that got a free pass despite never facing the superstars of the Negro leagues. Imagine how sick some of those HOF players would have looked if they had to face Satchel Paige in his prime rather than when he was pitching in his 50s and still pretty darn effective. Josh Gibson would have made Babe Ruth a footnote in the record books, too. My understanding is the Negro Leagues dominated MLB in an All-Star game or two and the talent and overall level of entertainment was so great that those games consistently outdrew a lot of major league franchises. The Negro Leagues were major leagues with major league players. Don't forget to use green next time lest you look like a major league ignoramous. There's no way anyone can conclusively say what would have happened over the course of a full season of competition if the Negro league players had been allowed in MLB. Surely, there were Negro leaguers who would have excelled, but there are just as many who would have failed to live up to their billing. Just use Triple A can't miss prospects as an example of how wrong scouts can be when the players move up to the next level. All Star games are just that. All Star games. The Negro league All Stars likely would have done well in MLB, but every player in the Negro leagues was NOT Paige or Gibson. They had their fair share of roster filler, and I'm sure that some of the numbers that the All Star Negro league players accrued came at the expense of these lesser players. That said, I think Negro league players do have a place in the HOF, but I don't think it's right to say that any player would have dominated the MLB players because we just won't ever really know.
  3. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 28, 2007 -> 11:50 AM) And secondly, a different study by a UC Irvine Sociologist found that illegal immigrants currently have a much lower incarceration rate than virtually any other native born group of Americans. Illegal immigrants are particularly skilled at digging under, climbing over, and cutting through all types of fences. Hence, the lower than expect incarceration rate.
  4. If this is true, the Angels should be able to void Matthews' contract for misrepresenting himself.
  5. QUOTE(SoxFan562004 @ Feb 27, 2007 -> 11:48 AM) ESPN does this now and then... "nothing new to report, so we'll make some completely baseless rumors up that make no sense, but makes the Mets, Yankees or Red Sox better so their fans will continue to read" They can't even make accurate trade predictions at the trade deadline. Am I supposed to believe that they can predict trades six months away?
  6. QUOTE(Athomeboy_2000 @ Feb 27, 2007 -> 05:43 PM) I heard that this type of burial chamber and boxes is very middle to upper class in quality. According to the bible, Jesus' family was a lower class family. His dad was a carpenter, so not really middle class. His family would not have been able to afford this kind of burial. Joseph was in the Union, and he did some work on the side, so money wasn't an issue for the Son of God.
  7. QUOTE(Soxy @ Feb 27, 2007 -> 08:19 AM) My sister is a special ed teacher, and most of her classroom is kids with very severe ADHD. If you want, I can ask her what she recommends for young kids in terms of behavioral techniques. She also isn't huge on meds, so she might be able to help you out. I don't want to sound all scientology, but I agree with you and Flaxx about trying to hold off the meds. Ritalin is, basically, crack for kids. Pharmacologically it acts the same. It also is kind of a problem here on campus, it's sold and taken either as a party drug or as a "study aid" (though I've heard it's not that effective on that front). Any help/info would be greatly appreciated.
  8. QUOTE(BobDylan @ Feb 26, 2007 -> 11:25 PM) I have ADD. So does my brother, sister and dad. One is taking prespcription medication. Just from my experience, I don't think ADD is that big of a problem (adhd is another story). I find my attention span to work for long periods if I'm interested. If I'm not intrested, my attention span might last 10 seconds. I took medications for about a year, and while I was able to concentrate better, it was still on the things I wanted to concentrate on. If there was a class lecture I wasn't interested in, I'd put my "super" brain power elsewhere until the pill wore off. The pill keeps an attention span around, but the person still has to choose what to pay attention to. I guess what I'm saying (and rather poorly) is that ADD can't be "fixed". It can be treated for hours at a time, but never fixed. The most important thing he needs to have is a good, solid work ethic. A prescription may help him build a working habit. But it's just as possible to build a work ethic without pills. I would reccommend setting strict homework rules. Set the hours when he should be doing them. If he finishes early, make him get ahead or do something else constructive. Set a few hours aside for educational purposes only. You can also check his work to make sure he's not halfassing it. The pills will help him stay focused, but I think building a routine is more important in the long run. ^^^^^^^^ Is what my parents did to me. When they were strict about it and made sure I was doing what I was supposed to be doing, my grades were better. A lot better. When they got lazy, I got lazy with them and my grades went back down the s***ter. Well, the problem is that my son is in second grade, so work ethic isn't exactly his thing. I actually think that schools expect a little too much of kids too early now, but that's a separate issue. I do his homework with him every night (check, not do). Unfortunately, if I give him his homework and walk away, when I come back ten minutes later, he'll have done nothing. The same thing has been happening in his class. The teacher gives an assignment, and when she goes to collect it, there's nothing (or little) done. He's not hyper (though he was as a toddler), but he just can't seem to pay attention. For instance, I'll tell him to get dressed or brush his teeth in the morning, and he'll walk away for a few minutes and come back and will not have done anything. It's extremely frustrating, and I know he's not doing it on purpose. I structure his morning the same way every day, but I still have to get his clothes and bring them to him and constantly tell him every single thing that he has to do to get out the door to school.
  9. QUOTE(DrunkBomber @ Feb 26, 2007 -> 09:29 PM) Sorry I dont know any alternatives but I do think its a good idea to search for one. SOme of my friends have it and take things like adderol and they can be terribly addictive and you become completely reliant on them. Thanks. That's what I'm looking to avoid.
  10. QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Feb 21, 2007 -> 10:03 PM) 1. Commitment to God 2. Commitment to the White Community 3. Commitment to the White Family 4. Dedication to the Pursuit of Education 5. Dedication to the Pursuit of Excellence 6. Adherence to the White Work Ethic 7. Commitment to Self-Discipline and Self-Respect 8. Disavowal of the Pursuit of “Middleclassness” 9. Pledge to make the fruits of all developing and acquired skills available to the White Community 10. Pledge to Allocate Regularly, a Portion of Personal Resources for Strengthening and Supporting White Institutions 11. Pledge allegiance to all White leadership who espouse and embrace the White Value System 12. Personal commitment to embracement of the White Value System Your point is well taken, and I can't say I disagree with you, but I like when someone like Obama basically says that he and black people are responsible for their community. He's not saying that he wants reparations or anything similar. This church is saying, "This is the state of our community, and this is how we will change it. We will hold ourselves responsible for the future successes and failures of black people." Maybe I'm misinterpreting the 12 points of emphasis, but that's what they say to me.

    ADD/adhd

Anyone out there have or have a child with ADD/ADHD? I'm pretty sure my son has ADD. He's in second grade, and he has an awfully hard time paying attention and following instructions. He's always distracted, and his schoolwork is starting to suffer. No major changes or problems at home, either. In fact, he's always had this problem, so my wife and I are going to get him evaluated. What I want to avoid is a lifelong dependence on medicine. Does anyone have any personal knowledge or experience with a homeopathic remedy or a non-chemical technique to alleviate the symptoms? I kind of feel like the educational system and medical field are quick to diagnose this disorder in young boys because it has become acceptable. I'd like to find an alternative.
  12. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Feb 26, 2007 -> 06:30 AM) I'm getting March Madness just looking at that bracket. I'll take the 11-seeded Sharpton squad against the 5-seed Thurmond Filibusters.
  13. QUOTE(maggliopipe @ Feb 26, 2007 -> 07:50 PM) ...and Raising Arizona. He's definitely been in some decent flicks. I swear, I just do not get Raising Arizona. I must have seen the first 30 minutes of it 10 times. I know I'm supposed to like it, but I just can't get into it.
  14. North was funny when he was with Jiggets in the beginning. In time, he bought into himself (similar to Chris Berman) and started doing an act. I think even Jiggets got tired of him. Now, North's show is terrible. My dad listens, and whenever I go back to Chicago, it's always on in the morning.
  15. QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Feb 25, 2007 -> 11:00 AM) Most of these arrests occured in the same areas, Near 47th and Cicero and then further north near Armitage and Cicero. IIRC those areas were for years always crawling with hookers. How hard is it really to clamp down in those areas and scatter all the prostitutes?? My wife lived over there when we were dating (early 90's). It was always good sport to slow down near the hookers, then when they approached my car I would pull away and watch them scream and give me the finger. Ahhh, memories.
  16. QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Feb 23, 2007 -> 12:52 PM) The other night I finally saw a movie most people are shocked to hear I have never seen. I finally saw The Goonies. It was a decent movie, and my daughter loved it, but I don't feel like I have missed out on anything. Somehow, I never saw Goonies either. I don't even think I've ever stumbled across it accidently on tv. My wife loves it, though, so I'll rent it for my kids in a few years. I can't wait to watch Stand By Me with my son. He's 7 now, so I think I'll wait a little while on that, too. PS I'm not ashamed to watch Back to the Future every time it's on. My son alerts me every time the commercial with Christopher Lloyd comes on tv, "Dad, it's the guy from your favorite movie."
  17. June 23, 2007 vs. the NY Yankees. Game 75 for the Giants. God, I hope this doesn't happen. Hank Aaron deserves better.
  18. When I was in 8th grade (1986), I begged out of going to Bozo. Thank God. During one segment, Wizzo sat between my brother and sister and did his "magic." A later segment featured Pat (he took over for the Ringmaster, I think) doing some lame skit. Again seated between my brother and sister. I would have been so embarrassed to show up to school after that. I've never been on TV.
  19. Didn't hear too much about this until today. Pretty grim picture of the All-Star weekend. http://sports.aol.com/whitlock/_a/mayhem-m...220103009990001
  20. QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Feb 21, 2007 -> 05:35 PM) Rather than convert them from 3-4 bulbs to one, why not just spend a few extra bucks on long lasting bulbs (halogen, I think?) that are more energy efficient. It would be expensive at first, but save on energy and they last several years. Just a thought? I've done that already, but I figure I can save even more if I convert the light fixtures from three to one as well. It's 118 units, so the savings should be pretty significant.
  21. There was an article about this in the local paper Monday. www.iPodResQ.com www.nycipoddoctor.com www.ipodmods.com These were the sites mentioned if Apple won't help.
  22. My wife (as usual) gets her way. We picked up the dog Friday, and the name is officially Guiness. I like the name now, I guess. And my kids love the dog.
  23. Need a little help. I'm part owner of an apartment complex, and we pay utilities. I want to convert the ceiling fans from 3 or 4 bulbs to one bulb. I've done it before, but I can't find the caps to make this conversion anywhere (Home Depot, lighting stores, etc). Anyone know where to find these? Also, I want to find industrial carpet at a price cheaper than $0.53/sq ft that HD has. Any ideas? This is the type of stuff that should be easy to find on the net. Unfortunately, you have to sift through 10,000 web sites that are not useful before finding what you want. Help. The money I save will be invested in Sox gear and 30 packs of Bud Light.
  24. Ken "Hawk" Harrelson was the first MLB player to wear batting gloves. He later perfected and patented the "Hawk Walk."
  25. Cheers was so good. Way better than Gary's "Old Town Tavern."
