Why would he be after 2 years, if there’s no opt out?

Valid question, and honestly he probably easily gets an offer > 2/20. I guess we'll see. I could see the Sox being interested if they really are intent on moving Giolito.

I would love Clevinger at 2/$20M. I think that’s the exact type Of move they need to finish out the starting 5.

I agree. Clevinger might be around the place where he starts to regain his pre-TJ form. This would be a great signing.

I think people are wrong about judge. That was insane pressure last year. He has handled CF, some everything asked of him. He is a unicorn for his size. Also incredibly nice and gracious.

Whatever team gets him will be lucky. For baseball, he should be a yankee for life.

He doesn't seem like he has a body type that would age gracefully, and he's already on the wrong side of 30. I think he's an amazing talent but also a very dangerous signing for whoever gets him. And we all know it won't be the Sox. I'm cool with the Yankees blowing their budget on bringing him back.

So it's a sunk cost but the best the Sox can do is prioritize the more pressing needs which is an OF who can play defense and bat left handed and upgrade the starting pitching. The Sox are in no position to add another RHB and throw away prospects for a catcher. Remember this is the organization who thought Zack Collins was a 1-1 pick.

Sox just have to hope Grandal stays healthy enough to share the position with Zavala while his hitting rebounds. This is pretty much the case for all their duds from last year still under contract, Moncada, Eloy and Giolito.

You're telling me you would prioritize a catcher with 3 years left, who hits RH and give up the few prospects we have when the payroll is going to be less than last year with all the holes they have to fill and bite on Oakland's demands for a King's Ransom for him ? Suggest a trade for me that gets this done that just wouldn't create another hole.

I actually don't want the Sox to trade for Miller - as the cost wouldn't be compatible with where this team is at right now.

I said they need a serious upgrade at catcher, and I dispute you labeling catcher as a non important position. I know one team that is rooting hard for Grandal to stay our starting catcher  - the Cleveland Guardians. They can keep running all day on the Sox, take the extra bases on all those passed balls, and as an added bonus, their pitchers get a free out every time he comes through the order.

But don't be surprised if Pedro Grifol pushes the Sox for a catcher upgrade. He is a former catcher himself, and has already vowed to improve the team's defense. They say good defense starts in the middle of the field - primarily CF, SS and catching. CF is fine with Luis, but TA at shortstop and Grandal catching are not fine.

The most important thing a catcher can do is provide leadership, call a good game and catch the ball and have a strong throwing arm. Catchers should never be prioritized. They are usually base cloggers who age poorly. It would be a misappropriation of funds at this time, right up their with relievers. There are plenty of catchers who do the little things well enough out there for cheap. Plus if you aren't cutting Grandal loose that's a lot of money tied up in catchers for one season.

Oakland will try to get a lot since he has 3 years left. They are testing the waters to see if they can get a haul. My guess is he doesn't get moved this off season. I'm 53/47 on it though.

Grandal's salary is a sunk cost, whether he's on the team or not.  And if he's on the team, whether he's the starter or a backup. You're paying the man either way. That doesn't mean you have to let the position rot like it did this past season.

Right now one of the worst players in baseball, and the worst player of the disappointing 2022 White Sox is slated to be the Sox starting catcher. They need a serious upgrade.

If they aren’t going to spend anything in free agency, than go all out in the international market and put money into building up their scouting and development.

Short of that one-off where they signed Luis Robert during the rebuild, I think you know this isn't happening while Reinsdorf owns the Sox.

No thank you. Tim needs to move off SS as soon as Colson is ready to take over.

Why wait until then? I don't know why this is taboo to talk about. But Tim Anderson's defense at SS doesn't cut it. If they're serious about improving the defense going forward, I don't know how you can sidestep around all of Tim's errors at shortstop?

He's very athletic, with a strong arm and probably would be very good in either corner outfield spots or even 2B - and all of those positions would be less demanding than shortstop is.

Is this similar to the Eloy/DH discussion. Aren't we at a point of not caring what the player wants and doing what is best for the team?

Much talk is brought on to RF, 2B and a bottom of rotation SP - and rightfully so. But what about catcher? I know they're stuck paying Grandal 18.5 mil, but that doesn't mean you have to let him tank the position for the Sox for another season. His salary is a sunk cost whether you depend on him or not,

What if Willson Contreras' market proves to be a bit flat and he could be had in the 3YR/50 mil range? We might actually throw out would-be base stealers for a change. While he does hit lefties better, he is solid against RHP's.

You can fill 2B with the young guys - Sosa/Gonzalez. We probably already know the SP they bring in will be one of the buy low guys - which did work last year with Cueto. So you could basically split the available spendable dollars between signings Contreras and filling your outfield out - which Hahn indicated is likely via a trade.

The Sox are basically going to run the same team out there. FA signings will be marginal at best. If anything significant, which I highly doubt, will be through trades.

Well this is better than your post before the edit. I read your post that the same team was coming back...even though we already know Harrison has been let go (thanks God).

So according to ESPN, LaRussa gets replaced and we will be worse.

Is it too late to hire him back?

I can see it both ways. that Hahn has already kind of mentioned they wont be spending much in free agency might be part of any negative ratings on the Sox.

But either way - I want them to be rated low. And let the guys see these previews. Maybe they'll develop a chip on their shoulder.

What did Heyman say? Have the Sox said for sure they are letting Jose walk? Amazes me when a fan base accepts and in some cases wants their best player to take a hike when that means some other teams will bid for the same guy. Considering the Sox track record, if they find five or more other teams thinking about offering Jose or offering Jose, I hope they reverse course and realize it'd be smart to sign the guy. If other teams want Jose ... it's not like Sox scouts have distinguished themselves at all in judging talent. ... It's amazing how Jose's age is a factor. We act like he's ready for social security. He's about to enter his age 36 season. I'd sign him to a two-year deal with a third year club option. At 12 mill a year. ... I know, we have too many DH/1B types. We need Jose to walk so Eloy is DH with Sheets and Vaughn is 1B. I tell u I'd rank the guys in this order of who I want: 1. Eloy. 2. Jose. 3. Vaughn. 4. Sheets. Grandal is the guy u get rid of folks.

There's nowhere for Jose to play. Vaughn needs to play 1B. And Eloy should be the fulltime DH.

See the following quote from Rick Hahn, which is from an article on whitesox.com. That to me indicates things like Sheets or Vaughn in the outfield will no longer happen. And with Vaughn's value probably at a point of being pennies on the dollar compared to previously, he's not really tradable. There isn't much choice here for making the best possible roster in 2023 and beyond.

“We had a few guys playing out of position last year just out of the way the roster fit together and then driven more significantly due to the injuries.

“We want to avoid that going forward. We want to get to the point where we have guys playing in a role they’re more suited for. If that means we have to make some alterations from the roster from the outside, then that’s the route we’ll have to go.”

I can't understand how anyone would defend the Sox on their evaluations and development of any talent under their wings.

Obviously Colas had to start somewhere in the system to shake off the rust which is why his A+ numbers weren't as good as his AA numbers and he spent a lot of time there. Perhaps too much time.

I would understand your defense much better if you were talking about some fresh faced 19-21 who had been through the system and tore up lower levels and started the year @ A+. Here you had a seasoned guy who had already played in the Japanese majors. He traveled a long road to finally get his shot in the states.

I know it's water under the bridge at this point . We are all so paranoid about ruining prospects that when special ones come along you get ultraconservative on handling them. I never think it's a good idea to imagine worst case scenarios like you did. We do that all the time because we are used to seeing worst case scenarios happen with guys  like Eloy, Moncada, Kopech, Crochet, Robert mainly because of injuries . We expect our prospects to fail. Early in Cease's career there were many doubters here. Easy to say prospects won't make it . The odds are with you in that respect. The hard thing to do is to predict success when it comes to Sox prospects because we know they aren't renowned for developing their talent.

I remember Spring Training last year. I kept looking forward to hearing about Colas in some games and he had like 1 or 2 AB in ST and I was wondering why . Did he get hurt ? Didn't seem like it. Maybe it was because he was just so rusty at the time.

He's made some big adjustments along the way from Cuba to Japan to the states and from  A+ to AAA. A lot of guys with lesser talent surrounded by  cultures foreign to him , being homesick etc. would have wilted under the physical and mental strain.

If he was some college player and highly drafted or progressed through a system from the lowest level of the minors, he would've easily been in the top 20 prospects instead of the number 96 prospect. But even the guys who do the rankings got on board but it took them a few months after seeing how Colas ripped apart AA before he got that ranking.

Ultraconservative? Come on man. The dude was experiencing a new country and culture while he basted his way through 3 leagues. He has got to be feeling great about himself and his future heading in to 2023. It's absurd and reckless to suggest he should have been pushed to do even more than that IMO.

    Oscar Colas :

    A+  .311, .369, .475, .845  244 AB

    AA .306 , .364, .563,  .928  206 AB

    AAA  .387, .424, .645,  1.069 31 AB

Every level he got better . You can throw away AAA if you want since it was just 31 AB but saying Spring Training performance will be the deciding factor given his numbers in the minors seems a little off.

If they had just called him up for the last 2 months of the season you wouldn't have to say what you just did.

In my eyes it would have meant more to have him playing in MLB stadiums getting used to the venues he'll be playing at in the future and facing MLB pitching and playing when it meant something down the stretch. The only positive thing I can say about not bringing him up was that whatever was going on in the Sox dugout ,he wasn't exposed to the malaise.

His minor league numbers were outstanding, AVG, OBP, Slugging and OPS. He would easily become our OFer with the best arm. Sox OFers couldn't throw runners out. They missed cutoff men and their throws to the bases were often off target. Do you really want Sheets and Vaughn in the OF when you can have a guy with a skill set that was tailor made for RF ?

I'll defend the Sox on this one. A-ball to MLB in one season would be a ridiculous jump and probably irresponsible handling of Colas. If they do that and it fails, then we all bash them for rushing and ruining their prized prospect. Colas could come up here and go 1 for 47 with 28 strikeouts. Then what?

I'm on board with the idea of letting him earn a spot in spring training. Call Pollock the starter for now (assuming he chooses to come back) and if Colas takes the job from him at some point, then awesome. And the Sox still need to fill the other corner outfield spot.

I think people need to be more careful with Andrus. He was amazing for the White Sox and there’s nothing in his profile that suggests he will ever have another 2 month stretch like that, let alone a full season.

I don't disagree, but Harrison isn't the answer here IMO.

Elvis Andrus is very likely to be a downgrade from Josh Harrison if he were to be kept.

We better be careful with Harrison. I think people are assuming because he was better in the 2nd half, that he will be fine next year. He turns 36 midseason next year.

  16. 5 hours ago, Chicago White Sox said:

Why not just keep Josh Harrison at that point?  Either go young or do something big like Vaughn+ for Jazz.

Uggh, can't we set our sights a tad higher than Josh? I'd love Jazz, but I doubt Vaughn has a lot of value right now.

RH already said "we're not throwing money at the problem" (i.e. Tony already signed too many garbage relievers to long term immovable deals so all we can do under current budget is make small changes here and there even though any RHP worth his salt will shred the lineup. Again.".

Ofcourse Philly "threw money at the problem" and signed multiple savages and now they are in the World Series.

Rick Hahn is overdue for winning some trades that aren't for highly touted prospects.

And for Philly - yeah it stings watching Harper and Schrwarber kill it for them. They both could have been here. Schwarbs wasn't even that expensive.
